Little bit of a slow day today, so I was checking out the local Craigslist ads. Here are a few funny tidbits:

"I have been building computers for about 9 years. I can even run a reformat and do data backup on dvd/external hard drive/thumb drive." - Good thing! 'Running a reformat' is tricky stuff.

I have lots of experiance with all types of computer problems. for 80% of my calls i only charge $25. i am up from noon till 5 a.m.. - I should start offering computer repair in the A.M. hours, too, if there's THAT kind of money to be made!!!

Today only { 3/16/2009 } { until 9pm tonight} I am offer a complete spyware/virus removal from your desk or lap top computer windows based PC. - Holy crap. Can we say "Fly By Night"

hi my name is --------. I run a pc repair company from home, eventually I will open a shop. My charge is flat rate $35 for all repairs. My webpage has more information - The best part about this was that his "webpage" is a MySpace page and includes a picture of him standing in some living room with a cut-off tee. Way to present the professional image!

If windows needs reinstalled its 40 bucks you will get a valid key and a copy of Windows XP Pro. If Vista is requested I have Vista Ultimate and it will cost 80 bucks. - Would have been reported if there was any real contact information.

When i started putting my name out there. I took off all the unprofessional stuff off my myspace, because ppl can find you if they want to. I do use myspace as a form of advertising and it works fairly well for me since i do have alot of friends from hs and from the lil college i went to.

I was gonna put an ad on craigslist but i read the others that were on there and i laughed...and said to myself. "I dont want to be seen as one of these ppl."

I go solely by face to face biz card transaction, word of mouth, and my myspace.

I too started to do a craigslist add until I saw some that were on there.

Found one that said $20 an hour. Lol.

My son got his laptop infected with some virus. It keeps popping up asking us to buy something to remove it (yeah right). How much would that cost to fix and how soon could it be done?

The people on there are desperate. From time to time I call them up pretending to be a customer, you should hear some of the non-sense that spews from their mouths. It makes me sick.

Can you give us some examples ? maybe next time you could record the conversation for us all to have a listen too there excuses.

Here in the states it's illegal to record someone without them knowing.

Here in Texas it is not!

I just wrote an open letter to my local craigslist readers. I'd like some input from Technibble before I post it.

An Open Letter to Craigslist Readers; How to Choose a Computer Repair Company

Hi,
Since you're reading, you're probably in the market for computer repair.
Before I get started, let me introduce myself and tell you why I'm writing this letter.
My name is ************, I co-own ***************, here in **********. I'm writing this letter because I've been in the computer repair field for 13 years, now, and frankly I'm tired of seeing some bad techs giving us all a bad name. I'm not going to name names, but I'd like to give examples of what to look for (especially here on Craigslist).

1 One of the biggest considerations you probably think about when your computer breaks down is "What's this going to cost me?" That's completely understandable. Lots of the guys here on Craigslist advertise things like "lowest in town", "$35, I'll fix any problem", or "80% of my calls are just $25." $25 or $30 bucks sounds pretty tempting, and maybe they know their stuff. Here's the truth about that, though: At $25 or $30 bucks, they probably don't have insurance, probably aren't registered with places like the Better Business Bureau for dispute resolution, and probably won't reasonably warrant any of their work. Again, with this point, I'm not touching on their ability to do the job, but accidents do happen and nobody's perfect.

2 A question we always get at my shop is "What if you can't fix it?" I understand where this question comes from; Lots of people advertising on Craigslist say "If I can't fix it, there's no charge." To me, this speaks volumes about a lack of experience in repair. Nobody would take their car to a mechanic and then be happy when he's had it for a few days only to tell you "I can't fix it." Every computer problem is fixable. I won't lie, some problems can be very difficult to discover because they're intermittent or very specific, but once they're discovered and reproduced a good technician can (and will) find the cause and figure out a fix. Speaking with other fellow technicians, opinions on this vary, but that's mine.

3 Be wary of anyone that promises goods for an extremely low price, especially software. I saw an ad on here a few days ago, advertising Windows XP Professional for $40, and Vista Ultimate for $80. Let me tell you, those prices aren't legit. Wholesale prices of that software isn't even nearly that low. Software such as Microsoft Windows is, frankly, easily pirated. If you run pirated software, or counterfeit software, it may stop working because of a blacklisted serial number. Someone playing by the rules will get you legit software at a fair market price, not three or four times less than retail.

4 My forth topic may be the hardest to gauge, but it's one of the most important: Try to have a reasonably good idea that who you choose is qualified for the job. If you're having your computer repaired, it's probably difficult to judge technical ability based on your own personal knowledge, so try to judge based on the expectations you're given, others' reviews at places like Yelp, Yahoo, CitySearch, etc. Unfortunately, I've seen plenty of laptops come to us needing DC power jack repair, that have been to another tech. Since I promised not to name names, I will honor that, but that tech is clearly learning to solder on his customers' parts. The new solder on the jacks simply falls off of the contact points and doesn't form a bond. I really hate to have to tell my customer what I've found, because it means their system wasn't fixed right the first time.

5 Finally, check the business out. Find out basic things like how long it takes to start to work on your system, if references are available, any certifications or memberships, and what kind of workmanship warranty is offered. Ask if they're a registered and licensed business. If they answer the phone "Hello?", instead of with a company name and "How can I help you?", that's not a professional. If they only list a phone number, and no website, they're probably just a fly by night looking to make a quick buck. A reputable company would have even the most basic website with contact information and a little bit about their company (trust me...webhosting is cheap!). A reputable company tries to make it extremely easy to find them among the crowd.

Hopefully I've given you good advice and have pointed you in the right path to getting the repair service you need. I welcome any questions or comments at *********@************.com

Of course.
I think I've decided in the past couple of weeks that I want to make it my agenda to try to raise public awareness of these things. I'm considering writing to a few news stations to see if they'll hear me out.

I actually just got a call about my letter.
The guy gave me "Kudos" on the letter. He did mention that he doesn't currently have a website. I asked him "Why?" and he said that he just hasn't had the time.
I told him that, in my opinion, he should get something up as soon as possible. It helps set us apart and goes a long way to helping a professional image.

@14049752 Very nicely said.

Look at this one, this guy wants you to work for parts..

Fix my computer - get free computer equipment!
Here's the deal, I have two computers that I am stuck trying to get fixed. I have my main computer, but my wife and kids never get to use it since I'm always working on mine, so I need to get one (or both preferably) working soon. I usually fix my own computers, but I'm just stumped by these!

One is a Compaq Presario SR1123WM with a 2.53Ghz Celeron cpu added in:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00192728&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en

and the other is some gateway case with this motherboard and a 2.8Ghz Pentium 4 CPU inside:
http://support.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/d845hv/sb/CS-008815.htm

The Compaq was given to me with no CPU inside it and I added in a Celeron chip to no avail. No beep codes, no display. This is the one I will want fixed - probably need another CPU/fan.

The Gateway was working fine, I unhooked it for a couple months and now nothing. Needs an AGP 4x compliant video card and some memory I think, not sure otherwise. I don't see how the CPU could be bad, but maybe you'd know better.

I have boxes of hard drives, cards, expensive adapters and cables, a few PDAs, some game systems (GBA, N64, PS2, Xbox), and lots more available! I have also a IBM Lenovo Thinkpad T22 laptop with a flickering screen issue (works fine on external display - new battery lasts forever) that I could pay you with.

Ad title:

I will fix your computer problems for a beer

I am a computer science graduate living in town who will look at your computer or offer you computer advice of any sort, for a beer. Depending on how I feel I might make house calls if two beers are offered. I do not guarantee to fix the problem, but I'll try or at least give you my guess on what's wrong so you don't get ripped off when you bring it in to get fixed.

The thing about craigslist that's really pissing me off lately; The people who spam the hell out of the site, changing just a few words, posting the same ad. Flagging them as spam doesn't do any good... There are a couple of local companies and a few nationwide spammers that do it, but there's no way to stop them. One day last week a local shop posted 7 ads in the same day.

I wonder what their phone greeting is, I can imagine it being something like;

Thank you for calling Computer Repair, Daycare, and landscaping, how can we help you?

You can get your lawn mowed, diaper changed, and computer fixed with one call! Of course you would have to risk a curious 2-year-old getting hold of your laptop and feeding it apple juice.:D

Ability to run, terminate, and test CAT5 and CAT6 wiring.

That's crazy! I pay my cable monkeys at least $20.00/drop each. They easily make $30.00 - $40.00/hour depending on the job. College students love it.

Based on the ads on craigslist, It makes me feel better about my chances of success in my town lol. There is an ad for access database building for 10/hr!!! I can't beleive how short some people sell themselves.

I know that I myself was offering service for 45 + 10 an hour but in my head the logic seemed to work. but still 10 and hour for database design? wow.

I'm starting to wonder if advertising in a cesspool like craigslist could be more harmful than helpful. At the very least in my city's section, it is constantly flooded with people like these, and unfortunately I think our demographic appreciates lower cost than better service. At least the first time around. sad.

I can't wait to get my site up and start advertising. I was even considering applying at a computer repair store but most places ask for A+ cert, and I don't take that course til next semester.

You know I hate laughing because these people are trying to do right, the thing is that everyone thinks they can operate a business.
It's not enough to just know how to fix computers. Its about establishing yourself, and presenting your "business" in a professional manner.
I have seen many sole proprietorships boom and i've seen plenty of corporations fail.

I don't think that being incorporated, having a mysite.com email address, or even a dedicated phone line is necessary to be a good computer tech or business owner.

I found a guy on craigslist yesterday who posted that he only had 6 months of experience!!! I felt bad because he was already getting flamed by some jackass so I sent him an email welcoming him to the industry and inviting him to join technibble. No response yet though. Ill post if he replies.

I love this thread, always good for a laugh

I disagree. The people we're laughing at aren't necessarily inexperienced, they're just flat out unprofessional hacks, fly-by-nights, or morons.

Almost all of the ads posted here are terribly unprofessional. The people posting them weren't trying to do right, if they were they'd spend some time and actually DO it right.

@Pyramid

I never took this thread as a means to alienate or put anyone down. It's just funny. I'm sure everyone else who has posted in the thread feels the same. These Craigslist ads show techs on this site the way NOT to advertise thus it is as educational as it is entertaining.

In fact I have invited a local startup tech that advertised on my local craigslist board to join TN for a little more help. I don't think there is any elitism (or whatever) going on here.

Just my two cents.
Plus I don't think your raining on anyones parade, you're entitled to your opinion just as anyone else on this forum. Thats what makes a forum work. Discussion, whether positive or negative, is the engine that drives this community.

anonymous Mac Tech

All,

Sorry to rain on the parade here, but what does this thread of whining, mocking, and negativity serve really?

9 pages of "look how cool we are and how much the Pizza Techs suck"...are you guys kidding me?

Nothing to debate about, just techs sharing a laugh talking shop. Its not necessary to turn every thread into a pizza tech/elitist debate. There's plenty of other threads with that going on. No offense but just like if we think someone is asking a really novice question we should keep quiet, I think the same applies to your post.

While theses are funny as hell and a little sad if "customers" would actually use theses "techs." I doubt for one minute that anyone here has ever lost business to a pizza tech. Some people aren't willing to pay what a professional tech charges and those are the people that use pizza techs not mine and your customers.

I need some help with a reinstall if I could only get ahold of the guy who can run a format but his mom says he's grounded till Wednesday.

@ACG... interesting. Did you go to their website? Apparently, they're all over the place, but headquartered in California (sorta sounds like a remote support version of Gurus2Go) The devil is in the details. If I understand it correctly, the $27 is a one-shot remote support fix. They're really selling remote support contracts for $129/yr. If you want them to come onsite, it's another $75 per visit... on top of whatever else they sell you.

http://pc-repair.computer-repair-computer-service.com/computer-repair.htm (turn your sound down before you click)

It gets weirder. On their main page, they infer that they are actually "911 PC Fix", but

http://www.911pcfix.com/ goes to a separate page.

Several pages make reference to what seems to be their flagship product and cornerstone of their services, something they call CPULOCK. "Like UAC, but better!" according to their hype.

Google CPULOCK and it leads you to this page: http://www.cpulock.com/

I've been spam flagging their posts everyday for about two months now. I've finally had enough and have decided to just ignore it. I don't know what it is, but suddenly it's like every shop in my area has become a craigslist spammer. I post my couple of alternating posts when I'm allowed, and leave it at that. Here in the states it's illegal to record someone without them knowing.

Who must give permission to record a telephone or in-person conversation?

Federal law permits recording telephone calls and in-person conversations with the consent of at least one of the parties. See 18 U.S.C. 2511(2)(d). This is called a "one-party consent" law. Under a one-party consent law, you can record a phone call or conversation so long as you are a party to the conversation. Furthermore, if you are not a party to the conversation, a "one-party consent" law will allow you to record the conversation or phone call so long as your source consents and has full knowledge that the communication will be recorded.

or if I'm feeling a bit flush then there's...

PC Repair & Fresh Install £30.00 + Cost of Parts (if needed)

* Fault Finding
* Internal Pressurized Clean * Software Advice
* Fresh Install of operating system * £500+ software
* Defragment your hard drive *

I get my PC fixed and internally pressurized cleaned plus I can get advice on Limewire all for a £470 net gain.

Bugger fixing computers for a living, I'll get some semi-literate monkey to do it and I'll flog off the non-pirated £500 worth of software on eBay.

I reckon I've found myself a nice little earner. :D

Bye suckers. ;)

It's a cracked, modified version of Vista. Its making the rounds like a legitimate version, but thats because most torrent users are just pirates and they want to believe its ok to use something like this.

The idiot offering to install this stuff is just begging for a raid from the FBI.

Had one today:

http://www.protocol16.com/blog/images/CL-harddrive-small.jpg

Customer paid a guy $120 for a used 70GB hard drive, since new drives were hugely expensive, plus an hour of the techs time ($20) to replace a dead 120GB drive.

Superglue ladies and gents... Gawd I hate some people. Cash only sale, disconnected cell number. Poor guy was spitting nails.

Classic!

Don't have too much sympathy with the customer though, if he's only paying $20 an hour for labour did he really expect competent service?

As for being on Technibble it wouldn't surpirse me, there's a lot of them out there these days and it wouldn't surprise me if he's "in da house". :(

Didn't have much (some, but not much) sympathy for him either when i charged him to get the data off and a new hard drive... It shows that you get what you pay for. I'm more upset that these guys are dragging the names of our business down.

I've also heard of some tech in my area doing on site DC repair jobs with superglue - could be the same crackhead. Ah, to think that my whole truck and kit could be replaced with a screw driver set and superglue... If I ever find the guy, he'll learn exactly how bad superglue is.

Here is a post from around my area. I wish I had this disc he is talking about. :D

Never pay more than $20 for a virus clean up and tune up again - read on! Guaranteed!
Did you know that many computer repair shops don't actually repair your computer when you have a virus, but instead reload Windows (sometimes using an illegal copy of software)?
Reloading Windows to cure a virus is poor form - it erases your Internet favorites, browser cookies and any software that you installed after purchasing the system.
Sometimes the shop reloading Windows will not even bother to save off your tubro-tax, quick-books, pictures or music. Do you really want the PC shop fishing through all of those files?
There is only one proven way to get rid of the virus and preserve the system configuration - the methodology we use at *website*
First, we boot your computer from a special CD that erases all viruses. Next, we boot the Windows CD that came with your computer and run Windows repair.
After that, we install all Windows service packs and updates. This is the only correct way to erase a virus other than a full reload, which could take days.
We loan you a GREAT laptop while your computer is being healed (typically 24-48 hours). All you need is a valid SC DL.
We can remote in to help you with problems and questions instantly.
You never pay until you're satisfied.
We can also help with wireless networking, networking over powerlines, sharing printers and long distance unlimited phone service for $15 a month through your PC.
We charge a flat rate of $20 per computer for virus clean up and that includes a free loaner laptop.

I wonder if he ever gets the loaners back.

(((excellent post)))

I love making fun of the newbies on craigs. When I was out and running, of course I thought craigs would be a great place to advertise for free, then I saw the newbs out there selling their time for almost nothing. You can guarantee those guys don't have insurance either. They are the neighbor who knows a bit about computers and is the "neighborhood tech". You get what you pay for.

But I did try it, then I got weirdo clients who didn't want to pay! They constantly called begging for tips and I finally had enough. I took out my ads and said never again. I cruise my local craigs on occasion and found the other reputable companies stop using craigs and the Minneapolis comptuer services is basically plumb full of the guys who should be dealing with the porn stars of craigslist.

These guys I call "jimmyjoe@gmail" types. No website, no office, no credentials.

Agree 100 % why would anyone in their right mind trust their computer to someone who posts an ad that is barely legible ,it makes them look like they never finished high school.:eek:

Nobody monitors those posts seriously, no wonder those posts pass for ads.

Craig's List should be renamed "Slave Labor Listings". The worst is film business jobs. I constantly see ads looking for sound editors, Final Cut Pro editors, After Effects editors and the like, with pay of basically $10 a hour. AND they are looking for someone with their OWN equipment, a 4 years degree, years of experience, etc, etc. Why would someone buy $15,000 worth of equipment (that will slowly become obsolete) to struggle in this business? Believe it or not there ARE people whoring themselves out in order to "build a resume" -- trouble is indie productions are still NEVER going to have the budget to pay anything more than "slave labor" rates. I don't know how people survive in the indie film business.

This is why I am working towards doing computer repair.

Hollywood, IMO, is too full of wannabe STARS, not only actors but directors too. There are too many film schools, and they turn out too many worthless directors who think they are gods.

After the worthless director gets rejected over and over, he thinks "hey, why don't *I* finance the film *myself*?" So he gets cheap actors, cheap everything, and the film gets shown at a few film festivals and that's it. The lucky ones make it to a Redbox in Nevada mining country. (Where there ARE NO people! The motto is: "The Book of Eli: LIVE IT NOW!") If the indie director can get some washed up former A Lister (10 years ago) then it ends up in a Redbox in Kansas.

Brittany Murphy was doing tons of indie flicks, and earning very little, since there's so little money to be had in D List film. Actors get paid up front, a big problem if you have no money. There's the occasional success, like that dude who made a horror film in his bedroom with his friends and a camcorder and became the toast of Hollywood. I personally think that such stories are setups meant to boost the spirits of F Listers everywhere.

Yeah, film is horrible. When I was in community college getting a worthless management degree, I had to take a theatre class, because schools are committed to "broadening horizons". The teacher said I should major in theatre arts, since I was a good actor. I turned her down. I'm not THAT stupid.

Hollywood, IMO, is too full of wannabe STARS, not only actors but directors too. There are too many film schools, and they turn out too many worthless directors who think they are gods.

By the way, I saw a photo once of a poster issued by the newly incorporated Hollywood Chamber of Commerce way back in 1916. It had a photo of a VERY LONG LINE of people. The caption said something the the effect that tens of thousands of people were in that line to try out for a single movie, and only 2 or 3 would be hired. The tag line, in big bold letters at the bottom: DO NOT COME TO HOLLYWOOD. People ignored that advice from that day to this.

In 1938 a family in Detroit put their two daughters, aged 8 and 10, alone on a bus to Hollywood, with written instructions to report to central casting and send for the rest of the family when they became rich and famous. Somebody apparently noticed the poor girls looking lost at Union Station in downtown LA, and told the cops. The poor kids got free tickets back to Michigan. But hey, they had an EXCELLENT adventure! This was before freeways, remember, and some roads out west still weren't paved. Some guy mailed himself in a box from Chicago to LA in like 1926 I think. This was LONG before next day airmail. He was more dead than alive when he got to California. He eventually recovered, and no his story was NOT made into a movie.

Not one iota of surprise (as everything is accompanied with "BWOABWOABWOABWOA..."), hateworthy characters, huge gaping plot holes... just plain laughably awful. Thank god I watched it at a friend's place or I'd have wanted money back.

Yeah that one came across the oklahoma city one also.

This is a locl one i though was funny:

DAVID GOODPASTURE dba DOES NOT COMPUTE in Moore, OK and JONATHAN COUCH, formerly employed by DAVID GOODPASTURE. I bought computer, 2 days later I had to take it back and they swapped it out. That one lasted about 35 days. It was in their shop for over six weeks and I was given lots of excuses. Their "warranty" is worthless. I was NOT offered a replacement during time they had it in their possession in their shop. Finally they brought me a different computer. It was (1) dirty, (2) would not power up, and (3) was a downgrade from what I had purchased. I returned computer to David Goodpasture. He told me he did not have money to refund me. Said he would pay me "in a couple of days". He signed for return of computer and wrote a note to me saying he would pay me "within 15 days". I called to remind him of his promise to refund me. Now he will not take my calls. He has apparently cancelled his phone of 405 237-3161, as the phone company now says it is temporarily out of service. He uses cell phones to do business. I can only suggest that you KNOW WHO YOU ARE DOING BUSINESS WITH. I tried to get him to pay me, per his promise, TO SAVE HIM COURT COSTS. He will not return my calls. Please do not get taken by these people as I did.

Obviously this guy has HP restore disks, and nothing else. So if you have an HP with Vista and you have a virus, he will reformat your drive and reload the base O/S disk (that you most likely already have) for $150.

Wow, what a moron.

These people can't even type correctly. It would take them 30 minutes to change directories from the command prompt...UNREAL.

I already know how the rest of the United States feels about our Southern intellect. If this is what's going on everywhere else, I'm scared to look at the ads from Mississippi.... :(

This is why I do not advertise on CL because the people that lurk there are the ones that would call a bozo like this to fix their junk.

I should post an ad that reads "I fix $10 computer repairs"

You know what...I think I'm going to do that right now just because I'm that bored.

You thinking "Whats the catch?!" ....... there isn't one...

Im a Greenville Tech student in computer programming and honestly the only way to get your speed down fixing computers, is to fix more computers, the more you fix, the faster you can fix them...

Iv dont this before on CL and got my email BLOWN up, not to mention the MANY texts and a few phone calls...

I am best at A+ which means if you are whitnessing:
Slow computer
Viruses
Malware
Spyware
Blue screen of death
Random things not working on the computer
things that USED to work but stopped
the "EVERYTHING IS HUGE" syndrome or...
"everything is sooo small I cant see it" syndrome...

And tons tons tons more...

the only things I KNOW I am not good at is:
MACS
LINUX
and repairing printer...

Seriously, if you have a slow, virus filled, or whatever computer, text me... What do you have to loose cuz its serioulsy free.
I can text you how to fix your computer yourself or email you how to fix it...
Your computer is in the best hands... your own! You know this isn't a scam to steal computers cuz your doing it yourself with my expert advice...

If you text me I can get back with you very soon xxx-xxx-xxxx
If you email me I will get to it within 2 days most likely xxxxxxxxxx@gmail.com
and if you call me...... well...... I MIGHT pick up (haha) *im a busy person* :)

*****Also, Last time I was supprized how many people who called asking "how do I make my dial up faster without paying more" .............. I know how to do that too =)

I don't think I would trust my computer with someone who can't spell or use proper words.

But my question is: Should I even be advertising on Craigslist? And just out of curiosity, do you like mine?

Holy crap you're still around here!

I have reported him myself... that guy is such a ripoff artist. He gets flagged and reposts within 15 minutes every day it seems like. The other week he was even advertising a Phenom triple core as 2.1GHz x 3 = 6.3GHz. When confronted about it on CL his response was "well at least thats what eBay says."

It is hilarious to watch that clown in Christopher try to sell old dual core intel computers for several hundred dollars. All of them come with 24x7 tech support and an (activated) copy of Windows 7 Ultimate or XP Pro SP3. Hmm...

Hi. I am a computer tech new to the area, and am seeking new customers to work with. I have 23 years experience in system repair and am trained to work with Microsoft Windows XP, XP Pro, Vista and Windows 7. I am also trained to work on the hardware. As long as this ad is up, I am offering to take on all jobs for a $25 fee, if action is needed. If a system part needs to be replaced, then you cover the cost of the parts. I am friendly, reliable and do good work. You may email me if you need service, but calling me is faster. xxx-xxx-xxxx and ask for Decker.

$25 for all jobs! You guys ought to subcontract to this guy.

Your letter is good and I am one of these people that offer this the no fix no fee. Why as you said if I can replicate it then 99% I can fix but some will not replicate and here are a couple of examples

laptop powers off after 30 mins, I had it on for 5 hours with tests to stress it out but it never powered off

laptop that does not detect the hard drive. booted the laptop about 20 times with no problems and even tested the hard drive.

A lot of companies around my area offer this but I was actually going to drop it in the coming months as I don't get asked about it.

14049752
06-24-2010, 08:20 PM
I think my only point about the "No fix, no fee" thing is that it doesn't make sense to advertise that way. If you're a good tech, you can fix it. If you're not, you might give away a lot of your time not fixing systems. I wouldn't be happy to take my car in for repair, to later find out that the mechanic working on it thought he could fix it because he changed his oil once. Needing to take it to someone else wastes my time.

Having said that, I *completely* understand that there are curveball workorders that are insanely hard to pinpoint. They're an exception, and in those cases, yeah...I'd refund people's diag fee, too. But only after exhausting every possible resource I have.

I just wrote an open letter to my local craigslist readers. I'd like some input from Technibble before I post it.

__________________________________________________ _

An Open Letter to Craigslist Readers; How to Choose a Computer Repair Company

I offer no fix no pay service. But I do it based on what the customer wants. I can fix anything but I will also be the first to tell a customer when it just isn't worth it. You would be surprised how that little bit of honesty can sell a new machine. Most of my customers come back because I was honest with them.

bored and quiet here so I chucked a Craigslist ad on yesterday, and since then I've had 8 spam emails with links pointing to a digg.com url

I didn't realise digg were doing spam links now

Maybe you need a email program like Alpine: ;)

I can guarantee you that 99.999% of those "digg" urls are not going to Digg.

I'm sure that this at least goes via digg, this is the actual link with a coupla spaces added either side of the slash just in case :)

Let me show you an example:

Note the "j .mp" its actually a malformed url which turns out to be:

http://j„€‚mp/bJtbyv?email@mydomain.com

I edited the email@mydomain.com to remove my personal info.

so are the digg bit and the j.mp bit two separate links?

funnily enough as the notification email for your post came in, another spam email turned up at the same time, with the j.mp domain in it.

I'm just intrigued as to how "digg.com/u1SMum?18006125399" redirects to another domain - I guess they have a digg account and have submitted it

I combed through here reading a few ads. Few comments I could agree with. Why would a company think any worth while candidate is going to step forward for 13 bucks. "Jeff's Computers" in stl, MO constantly wants techs at minimum wage. Either always looking because no one answers or no one is competent at 8 bucks an hour. Or people posting as an actually company selling pirate software, agreeable dumb and rather scam like. But what made me crack a chuckle the most, nah, what brought me to a tyrannous gut laugh is the guy complaining the kid can't even pay a phone bill, but is taking business from him. Dude? Are not embarrassed to share that? And half the people pissing and moaning about these kids forget thats how they started. When I was 6 and helping people write .bat menus for DOS I certainly hope IBM wasn't afraid of me. If they might have realized simple fix, buy him out, give him a job.

Cracks me up you guys sweat the small stuff over kids so much. Some cut grass, some sell grass, some fix computers. Youth understand them more than most adults, most adults trust kids more than over priced shops that have to result in smeering kids over the internet and posting it on their business walls. I ever walk into a place that openly has some **** up of the competitors being drug around and kicked at, I know these people have issues with competition and are probably not fit to handle my issue with the grace it deserves.

TL;DR Lay off the kids. I use to be one, still am if you count my freelance side work. That big of a threat give them a job. If not, don't look worried. Sends the wrong idea to your potential customers.

You just joined a few minutes ago and your first contribution is to only post a nonsensical rant against this thread. You mention it in your intro and here. Is it possible you were mentioned here and feel hurt ?. Sounds like you are a kid pretending to be an adult.

As I've said before, I was that kid once. I used craigslist for ads when I was younger and out of work. Brought in plenty of freelance business, and regular clients I still hold today. I'm sure in your opinion 21 is still a kid. But I've had a lot of experience, and yes I am somewhat cocky about it. I intend to contribute here, if I run into a question I've got an answer to, I'll share it. Like wise a discussion I have an opinion to. No, you haven't mentioned any of my ads on here. I just felt like sticking up for the little guy a little. I'm sorry you failed to see any logical in my "nonsensical rant", that is your problem not mine. Opinions are being offered here, so I offered mine. I think its redundant for people who like to claim they have "established" companies to get so defensive as to kids who are also trying to make a buck use a form of advertisement that is available to them.

We were all once kids. I look forward to putting you on ignore until you burn yourself out.

Sounds like a splendid idea. Might I point out it would be more effective to just ignore me in the first place rather than to tell me your ignoring me. See, I don't care and was rather hoping you would, therefor no need to state, just do. Now go away and be small.

most adults trust kids more...

I very much doubt this. Most adults that are giving kids their computer work are probably doing one of two things; One is allowing them to work on their computer so they can learn, because they're family. or Two, looking for the cheapest way to get their system fixed. Most adults are probably aware that a real computer repair shop is usually more capable of fixing any problem.

As it is, I'm personally not worried about the kids doing virus removal after school. They don't cut into my business at all and never will. I still don't mind having a laugh at their expense if they post a ridiculously bad CL ad.

That's so very unfortunate that you're thinking this way. At 21 you're not young enough where I'm going to say to you "That's nice, kid. Here's a lolipop."....You are old enough that you should learn some humility and realize that you don't know squat. Once you get over your ego you'll be able to learn some really cool stuff, and maybe realize just how much you don't know.

I agree. Allow me to rephrase what I've said. In the case of something even the end user would describe as a basic problem, the kids are normally the first choice. Even if the user understand the problem isn't severe, he may toss it to the neighbor hood kid, or a family member. Any complex problem that requires knowledge and skill, any logically thinking person, would go to specialist. I'm saying the kids are cutting into a completely different sub market than what the shops should be aiming for. I just find it funny that people are sincerely being threatened by it, even if it is just enough to be motivated to post about it. Not saying I don't enjoy a chuckle at a poor craigslist ad, but saying its cutting into business...

Again your right. I don't know **** compared to Mr.Gates I'm sure. I'm sure I'll even look at most of you as my superiors. I'm cocky as it maintains confidence. I admit, daily in the tech industry I run into a problem I haven't seen enough to turn into a two minute fix. But I am confident that I can quickly learn how to overcome it. I've watched countless men who are years older, twice my age, or even beyond that come and go out of tech shops. Most of them lacked skills which I had acquired due to my over confidence. So I tend to keep it, and appreciate it for where I've gotten with it.
