That.
It would be nice. Virtualisation its very essential on my work, and probably on many others.
No matter wich program, VmWare, VirtualBox, Microsoft VirtualPC...

agreed,as a newbie virtual user, I can benefit from your advice

I have experimented with virtualbox,linux,

just installed free Virtual PC 2007 SP1,

it took 3 hours to install Vista biz ed,on XP pro on fast laptop 4 gig ram, is it always this slow?

wow!, that is a lot of time.
i think it should not take so many hours.
Give a chance to VirtualBox. Looks like Microsoft has abandoned VirtualPC.
I recently downloaded Windows 7 (the leaked version :D:rolleyes: ) and installed it on a virtual machine with VirtualBox. 1 Gb of RAM and 10 GB of virtual Disk. It blows!! its fast and really superior to Vista.
VirtualBox is very stable.

¿how much memory got on your pc?, cpu speed?

I was using my old computer to run a virtual machine but it was quite slow. It was an AMD 3400 with 2gb or ram I believe. I tried different setting for memory, etc. but it just never improved. I bought a quad core with 4gb of memory and now VM blaze. I think the quad really helps you not get bogged down especially with AV and other crap running on the host. Also VBox has my vote as well as other people's reviews that I've seen.

The instalation took about 40 mins.
Boot time, 6 to 10 seconds.
The Guest additions works perfect on Windows 7, so OpenOffice.

ok, I installed VirtualBox (win) on laptop, created 2 virtual machines,Win 7beta , and Vista biz ed, however ,need to connect to my router, which is WEP secure, password etc

reading over user manual, says VirtualBox uses NAT "the virtual machine is invisible and unreachable from the outside internet;"

what does that mean, you cannot connect to your physical router?

how do you connect your virtual OS to the real internet?

well, on my windows partition i could not.
the documentation is no clear.
However, on my linux partition, the was no problem. I choiced NAT, and when it started, the VM connected to the internet. I do not use wireless connection.
¿did you install the "guest additions" on the VM?. if you haven´t, you should try that.

pcmac, goto the network settings for the VM and change its type to "Host Interface". Your WiFi card should be in the list of available interfaces, and choose that. When you start the VM it can aquire an IP from DHCP.

Using NAT, I have gotten access to the outside world, but I have forgotten how I did it because I now use Host Interface and it works great.

Also, do the Guest Additions thing too. Makes the VM experience so much better.

It seems you need to set your DNS servers manually.

ok, i changed type to "Host Interface".
see WiFi card

however my router is WEP encrypted, it sees a network but cannot access it,so i enabled SSID broadcast, changed name network and still cant connect

but can connect on another real laptop, not virtual...

hmm, Might want to do the NAT method and change your DNS servers in the VM.

I haven't tested Host Interface over WiFi, a quick google search mostly brings up Ubuntu hosts, but they need to create a virtual bridge or something weird.

Let me know if the NAT DNS method works

did that...still no connection

Hmm, The only problem I have had was where I needed to set the DNS servers. There seems to be a lot of issues with trying to use VB over a wireless network. A few people have "fixed" it by doing a complete reinstall of VirtualBox and the Guest OSes.

A couple other solutions are to install the guest additions onto the Guest OS or change the networking card to an Intel one. This is if the guest is not seeing the network adapter (no drivers in Vista or Win7 for the AMD cards)

You may also have to manually bridge the VirtualBox network interface with your wireless connection.
