I was wondering what everyone's pricing scales were for data recovery from hard drives? I have a hard time getting my prices down for anything because it seems like I'm always seeing either see $500/gb big box store prices or $15/hr kid prices.

Mine:

Recovery from a healthy drive: $50+ (price waived if re-installing OS:$70)
Recovery from file deletion: ?
Recovery from file system corruption: ?
Recovery from a failing drive with bad sectors: ?

Typically we charge 200 dollars.

200 for what exactly? I mean if one customer had a failing hard drive and another customer's kid accidentally deleted their family photos, you'd charge the same price? (That's fine if you do, I'm just looking for clarification)

$70 for OS reinstall? Hope that's at least off-site. I'd charge $70 for the OS install plus $50 to transfer the old data off the hard drive. As for data recovery I charge around $130 minimum and that would include up to 2gb and the I would charge $65 for each additional 2gb.

Now if its something like recovering a deleted photo and its a simple 5min job running recuva I would still charge $130 but I would also clean up their system, defrag, ccleaner, check for malware, etc.

Last year a company came to me with their server. someone formated and reinstalled the server os. I was able to recover the backup file (yes they stored it on the local drive) and rebuild the server to exactly like it was before the "error".

$760 yay! 8 hours of work.

Thanks for the reply and yes I do all work at my shop. I don't do house calls, thank God.

Would anyone else care to share their pricing scheme?

We charge $145.00 flat fee for any data recovery we can do, but to be honest I cant remember last time I had a recovery we were able to do, most of the recoveries we get are failed hard drives with head crashes that almost always need a clean room recovery, if that's the case we send the drives to a company we deal with and add $100.00 for our shipping costs, trouble and bringing back the data.

On a working hard drive, flash drive, covers formatted and file deletion. We charge $99 plus call out if we have to pick it up for Data Recovery. If HDD is malfunctioning and cant be read by our data recovery PC then we can send to Melbourne to Technetics for clean room recovery and charge a markup on the total cost of the recovery. We always get the customers OK after getting a quote, The Pros in Melbourne are not cheap..... last job was a laptop HDD with a faulty controller board / electrical surge, cost $800 to recover The whole HDD.

I did one earlier this week and gave a customer 2 options.

Recover data: $150
Recover data and install new 80gb drive: $250

It seemed to go over pretty well. At first they were going to just do the data recovery, but then realized for just $100 more, they'd get the laptop completely working again.

I just wondered how you guys bill a customer when there is no data recoverable?

I had a guy loose all the pictures off his SD Card, he told me he formatted it a couple of times, I ran numerous different recovery progs on it for over 48 hours.

How would you guys bill for that, nothing recovered but hours of electric used, yeah i know it was only about 15 mins max hands on time, but still we all have expences we need to recoup.
