Seems a lot of us are constantly talking about repairing XP. Some of the scripts and tools that we use work great... but they do not work on Vista. Now we have windows 7 in the near future - and I have a feeling that many of the Vista tools will work on 7 by nature, but the XP tools still will not work. Perhaps we should start noting or tools by what they are supported on! For example:

Dial-a-fix. Great tool for XP - not so great and usually will not run on Vista.

UAC Disable - great tip and trick for Vista - but we all know UAC is not XP related (thank god)

As technicians, we should be able to know what works on what platform. Maybe when we suggest a tool or a tip or trick - we also note what OS it will work on. I think this might help us stay organized - and like the above example - we know not to put Dial-a-fix in our vista repair folder - or we know not to put UAC tricks in our XP repair folder.

Just thinking out load as usual! Granted, much of our tools are universal - I just think we need to think a little more about compatibility so that we know exactly what tools we will need for the job that we are working on.

Yup agreed. Saw that one when I tried to run dial-a-fix on my vista laptop. Did a google search for it running on vista, but everyone had problems with it. Hopefully they come up with a new release for it soon.

I would recommend TweakUAC. You can switch it to quiet mode, which will still have UAC enabled, but will supress elevation prompts for administrators which is perfect in my opinion! Its the way it should be. Although if your system is set up right and secure enough, you shouldn't need UAC anyway.

yeah most aps that work on vista except virtual dvd/cd (daemon/alchol...)

i even had the win7 system give me a warning saying that "this system command will not work on vista ultimate" or something like that, win7 is basically vista with a few tweaks and alot of services are run using the task scehdular as opposed to being on all the time.

So I've heard vista 2.0.

very few of my tools work for vista but most of my call outs are for windows xp based machines but we must have good software to fix issues that might arise with vista and windows 7.

It must be cause vista is perfect so we don't need tools for it. :D:rolleyes:

Have you tried the UAC replacement from NortonLabs dot com? I don't care for Norton, but I really like this utility. It allows you to permanently answer "Yes" to some UAC questions, while not disabling it entirely.

When I first used Vista, I was amazed to learn that Microsoft did not include that feature in Vista. It should have a "remember this" or "always run" option when challenging a program startup.

Thanks for the tip.:) ]
I hope it has some security protection though so a rogue program does not give itself permission.
