Thats pretty ridiculous and a little far fetched for the girl to drop out of college because she couldn't use the OS or install word. Logic would tell someone to contact Dell and get the situation resolved. I understand that the media coverage is putting Ubuntu in bad light but that gives no right to the enthusiasts to bash her or the station. Thats a small story that got blown way out of proportion.
People are bashing her because she sounds like a complete moron who blames everyone but herself for the problems she creates. The original article is beyond ridiculous. She buys a laptop, finds out she's to incompetent to make it work, and then cancels TWO semesters of college before contacting local media. Her biggest mistake was complaining about linux on the internet though. You can't do that without a legion of wolfshirts jumping all over you like a new kernel release.
Quite honestly I'm glad it blew up in her face. Maybe next time she has a problem she'll take personally responsibility and solve it like an adult. With even a slight amount of effort she could have figured something out, but her plan was to cause enough trouble so other people have to fix her problem which is exactly what ended up happening.

How much public funding does Madison Area Technical College receive?
To be fair to the girl, Linux isn't for everyone, and neither is Open Orifice.
The blame lays with Dell, they should not have sold her Linux, and the college too.
The college should have provided guidance.
*Let* the computer engineering students chose what they want, as they can make an informed decision.
*tell* everyone else they are going to use Windows and MS Office, as they are unable to make an informed decision.

The problem was, in the link to the original article in the link above, that she took two semesters to ask Dell for help. Had she contacted them as soon as a problem arose they would have fixed the issue.

What I find quite unbelievable is a laptop with Ubuntu and OpenOffice for $1,100 You can get a decent windows laptop for college use for $800 so what did she buy?

What Im wondering is: Did this particular build come with Ubuntu as the default OS or did she customize it on the Dell site? Because if she customized it and selected an OS that she had never heard of then she is a complete moron but if it was the default then shes alittle less of a moron for not checking the specs. Although someone that couldnt figure out a solution to the problem without going to the media probably wouldnt check anything before they bought it.
I think the story itself is an example of bad journalism. Blame the big bad company for their mistake because its their job to help the stupid customer 100% of the way. The media can make anything sound bad, especially when the headline "[Insert major corporation here] did something wrong" sounds better than "Customer fails to read carefully/ know what they are buying" because in reality, who cares about a customer being stupid? No one. Who cares about big companies screwing up? Everyone
