A DOCTOR has told of the desperate efforts to save Australian icon Steve Irwin after the Crocodile Hunter was struck in the chest by a stingray barb today.

Irwin, 44, died this morning after being fatally injured while filming a nature documentary off Queensland.

There goes a great man, The Crocodile Hunter, and the person whom a lot of people outside Australia considered to be the prototype Aussie - accent and all.

It sucks because he was a good ambassador for Australia. However, I bet that he was harrassing the ray in some way, grabbing it or something.

They say he was just swimming above it and it felt threatened, and then struck. He pretty much died instantly as his lung was punctured and the venom in the stingray barb caused a heart seizure.

Yet another Aussie icon gone, there's pretty much only one more left now., being Dame Edna.
