Hi,

I wouldn't quite place this as a single repair tool of the week suggestions as much as a good emporium for daily new tools and what I consider a secret web treasure chest in a way...

Http://www.giveawayoftheday.com gives away FREE Licensed software everyday for a period of 24 hours. You get the serial number and it does not expire. The only thing lacking is tech support but as we are techies we don't always need it.

Enjoy!

Apparently the licenses are only good for that day so I've taken to installing everything from them into a Windows XP virtual machine. That way I can backup the VM file, and not worry about losing any apps since I reinstall windows probably once every month or two.

The licenses have not expired for me. It must've just been that one program you installed? Which program did you have the issue with?

Thanks Majestic, nice find.

Welcome :) Glad to share. I figure it's a win win situation all around.. (the more people that know about the site, the more companies use it, the more quality software goes up..)

The software doesn't expire, but it says you can only install and activate it on the day of the giveaway. So if you were to reinstall windows you couldn't replace anything by using the installer you downloaded. I haven't actually tried it though, I just assumed you couldn't be that's what it says.

hmmm.. I didn't notice that. I'll see if any software I downloaded earlier fails to install. That said, wouldn't it be easy enough to roll back the date on the computer to install it if it were a time/date issue?

I'm not sure. I assumed the GOTD window that pops up after you install something was activating it via the internet. Of course that's just a baseless assumption.

I think I'll download the text to speech program they have today and try to install it tomorrow, and then a few days after just to see what happens.

Edit: I found this quote on their wikipedia page "Software can only be downloaded on this specific day because of included protection software that checks the website and activates it on the day of the giveaway.", and then later on it says "You can only install and register the programs before midnight -- after that you cannot reinstall. This causes many users to regard the software as trialware."

I think I'll keep installing everything into a VM only used for this purpose so it can easily be backed up.

Damn! I never noticed this. Oh well, no free lunch.
