View Full Version : Computer Repair Utility Kit V2

I will be releasing an updated version of the Computer Repair Utility Kit (http://www.technibble.com/computer-repair-utility-kit/) soon and I would like to know if there is anything you would like to see in it. It'll have most of the tools mentioned in the Repair Tool of the Week (http://www.technibble.com/categories/computer-repair-tools/) section like the last one, but is there anything outside the realm of the RTOTW tools you would like to see?
I plan to add some useful sites links in it such as places to find drivers, manuals etc..
Any thoughts?

I use the Computer Repair Utility Kit almost daily and can't wait to see what v2 has to offer! The only thing I can think that I would like to see is more antivirus and antispyware options, but I know there aren't many that are portable.
Can't wait!

I can not wait either... i have stopped using the old one because of newer versions of software and use my own portable apps!
few things I use that i dont remember being on the old:
MBAM
SUPERAntiSpyware
COMODO Registry Cleaner Portable
GlaryUtilities Portable
CCleaner 215 or newest
undelete +
FireFox Portable
HWMonitor
McAfee Removal
and for those that use MBAM: This is a utility that is designed to run in normal mode (not safe mode)!!!

It's actually pretty simple to add more or updated apps. It's keeping them updated that is the pain. You have portable versions of MBAM and SAS??
Oh, and right under your McAfee Removal you should add the Norton Removal Tool! lol
The Norton Removal Tool was included in the original I think.
I've almost finished making the menus for my newest version. I might post the xml file for PStart so everyone can see what's on it.

Jory,
Sounds cool, I'd like to see it.

The Norton removal tool is on the new one as well, but I moved it to be next to the McAfee removal tool. I have SuperAntispyware on the new one as a portable item, but I cant get MBAM as a portable item.
Check out frostbytes' posts in "Scripts! Scripts! Scripts!". That has a portable version, and the site that released it has a splash screen like the portableapps.com one so you could probably get a copy from there.

malwarebytes should run from it's install folder(after copying it somewhere else) without being installed. The service won't run unless you manually add it to windows or start it but the scanner should work.

Maybe some of the free remote desktop software, eg. VNC?
Also, is it possible to include a whole heap of scripts for installing/updating and running the different antivirus/antispyware programs?
It would be great if you had all the software bundled in the Utility which you can run individually, then also had an option where you can run a script to perform all the common tasks done to a system - eg. run cc, update and full scan with antivirus, then same with antispyware, do a registry scan and then possibly defragment?
Im sure that if scripts were somehow built into the CRUK there would instantly be a forum thread where members could display their own scripts that can be added to perform many tasks as seamlessly as possible.
Looking forward to the new version.

If possible post the file that contains your menu structure. That will most likely tell us what the entry is name as, and gives us the name of the folder it's in. I saw a couple things I don't have.

That's awesome, Gunslinger!
Another app I put on mine and use quite frequently is called "System Information for Windows". There's a standalone version and works quite nice.

Very impressing kit Gunslinger, though I do see lots of paid software (and some naughty things like RemoveWGA ;) ) in there so theres lots I cant include in my free one without breaking any laws. Your unlikely to get in any trouble by using pirate software, its very likely for me to get in trouble for distributing pirate software though. Definitely an impressive kit though.

Thanks for that Jory, I checked it out and it turns out that the version of Malwarebytes that was packaged into a portable version is the PRO version, so its pirate. Im going to try portabl-izing the free version.

Doesnt appear to be portable. Tried this and it doesnt work. I get runtime errors.

I used thinstall back in the day to make my Malwarebytes portable.
As for the WGA remover, I use it all the time, not to make Pirated versions of an OS but because I think its wrong of Microsoft to hide it in auto updates. I consider it spyware.
The only thing I think I showed that might be iffy was the ever rest program.
Bryce W

Drivermagic Pro, File Scavenger and Treesize Pro are all paid products. Of course, I dont know if you purchased the legitimate version but if you did it'd be a pain in the ass reregistering them or installing the appropriate registry keys all the time.
I agree on where you stand with RemoveWGA, plus WGA also can go off on legitimate installs too but, unfortunately, Microsoft considers RemoveWGA bad so I am going to keep it out of my version.
As I mentioned before, I can get my ass kicked for distributing pirate software plus as someone who has a digital product myself, I have alot of respect for people who do make digital paid products and believe they need to be supported.
The version of Malwarebytes that Jory mentioned ALMOST made it into the kit but I then noticed it had a pirate registration key visible. I looked on the Malware Bytes forums to see if a portable version was doable and the Malwarebytes president came into the topic and said that he does not want a unoffical portable version circulating so I have to respect that (as much as I wanted it in there).

No problem, I completely understand where you are coming from on this one Bryce. I did not mean for it to be taken that you use the programs I have but rather my kit give you some ideas.
I'm a whatever works kinda guy and a one man shop. I would never install pirated software on a customers PC. What I might run from a flash drive or disc is another story. Although almost all I purchased Really no different than someone hooking a customers HDD up to their personal computer and scaning for viruses with a paid antivirus or partitioning a customers HDD with their personal copy of Acronis. Most computer techs do these things regularly and think nothing of it. Mike Smith and Steve Cherubino are both well respected teches who have done this.
I have many other free programs that might come in handy as well.

So is MBAM for what we are using it for. If you wanna be legit, you have to have the MBAM technician license. FYI: It costs $100 per year per technician

I don't know any technicians who don't download and install MBAM and Superantispyware on infected systems. I know of none that have a license to do it.
I can understand Bryce's position, because he really has to mind his p's and q's for the sake of the site. But lets not pretend most if not all techs break the letter of the law on a regular when it comes to this.

The changelog looks good as far as what this version is going to have in it.
I hate to ask these kinds of questions because I know that they are impossible to answer definitively until everything is all said and done but..
[If everything goes smoothly] When can we expect to see this version released?
What will be the overall size of the utility?

I want to thank Bryce for the hard work on this. I'm sure you know how valuable something like this is, as well as technibble in general. It is great to have a place like this to visit and share ideas or problems or gripes with people who understand what you go through from day to day. This site, and the thoughtful and knowledgable users of it have really helped me in my first few months of being open for business. It is greatly appreciated.

I doubt he will give you his kit because he probably spent a whole lot of time putting it together. You could make your own kit based off of the one on this site.
It's not hard to add and change things in PStart, right click on the window somewhere and it will give you all of the options.

I use write lock to protect my key from viruses.
When I open Launcher.exe it complains about write lock then will not do anything else.

You can see why though. These guys produce great utilities for free and then we take away some of their last remaining revenue stream by diverting traffic from their sites. I'd be a little pissed too.
