 Reading “Santa left me coal for Christmas” made me think about a situation we had with HP and COMPAQ laptops over the past 3 months. We have seen a half-dozen or so laptops that came in dead…..lights come on but black screen and no post. In common: each 13 – 20 months old, each the thin, wide screen (nice), each seemed to get very hot.
First thought was heat killing them. The last customer’s warranty had expired less then 2 months prior. I told her it would be worth an irate call, squeaky wheel gets the oil! An hour later I received a call from Compaq. He informed me that we were right about the dead motherboard diagnosis but not because of heat. It is caused by a BIOS glitch. It not only affected HP and Compaq laptops but some HP desktops also. He also stated that HP/Compaq had extended warranties 1 year for affected models.
So if you get a dead HP or Compaq, before you give up hope, call them and see if it’s under extended warranty. :)
