Merry christmas all, Got a customer that gave me his laptop a day or two ago. Now I know i shouldnt be looking at it on Xmas eve... got to have some standards right? But here I am.. it was freezing up trying to get to safe mode, Also windows recovery wouldnt load.. got froze on "loading windows". Also the boot cd wouldnt load.. sO i used my adapter and loaded his harddrive on myy computer... then ran chkdsk on the drive.. put it back in and now even the screen doesnt turn on, any ideas? Hp Dv5000. I assumed it was just a faulty hard drive.

Maybe its the screen now?
I had dv 500 with a faulty inverter.

Did you stress test the machine or at least run memtest86+ ?. How old is the laptop?. We had a laptop that was booting less and less until nothing. Turned out the cmos battery was dead but it didnt give us that clue on booting nor did it lose bios config.
If the screen doesnt come up now you might not be able to diag anything but if you can get to the cmos battery and its a easy replace you might try that.

take the memory out and try one stick at a time and see if it posts. Do this with the battery out and the charger plugged in. If it doesn't post then it's toast most likely. the whole dv series are junk.

Does the screen work on an external monitor?

Lousy situation to be in, well it's not really,
but if something comes in with X, and in your hands, it starts to demonstrate Y, it always makes me feel like I caused it, even thought you obviously didn't.

The laptop didnt display anything, even on a monitor.. just all the lights sat on, But the harddrive passed all the tests so it seems like the motherboard was just dying and I didn't realize it. I broke the news to him he took it well. Paid me for my time. It wasn't really worth putting in a new motherboard or anything it was a fairly old laptop.
