i have a Dell Latitude D505 and the screen has gone dim, ive changed the inverter, screen still dim.
i swapped the screen for a new one (thinking that the cold-cathode flourescent tube is broken) screen still dim.
now im guessing it must be a M/B problem. laptop works fine when you plug in an external monitor.

any ideas???

I know you've probably done this-but are you sure you have the brightness up full? Downloaded the newest video card drivers? tried different power supply? those are my guesses, hopefully not mobo:(

cover switch - checked not stuck
brightness up full - check
Downloaded the newest video card drivers - check
tried different power supply - check

after all this it has to be the motherboard.
Thanks all for the help :)

I doubt its the motherboard....I would try another inverter or even a the video ribbon. If you want send the laptop to me I can check it out before you spend money on a motherboard. I'll give you a 10% discount.

Shipping from Ireland to Jersey would be a nightmare!

The d505 is prone to failure. I've lost count how many dead ones I've seen in various forms of well,, death. Most likely the supply line that powers the inverter is dead. d505 boards aren't horribly expensive.
