I need to recover a specific file that was accidentally overwritten with another file when it was given the same name. Is this possible? I've run GetDataBack and Easy Recovery without success, any ideas??

Eek! I don't fancy your chances tbh. What file is it? If it's a word document for example, you might be able to find a temp auto-backup copy somewhere on the hard drive.

What operating system and what type of file?

alright, if your on Windows Vista and have all the default settings then your VSS should be working, right-click on the file that was overwritten and then click the previous version tab....hopefully the last version will be there.
(Note: Turning off system restore, disabling the tcp/ip helper service, and unchecking File and Print sharing in your NIC card will disable previous versions. Also running a 3rd party disk defrag will clear previous versions.)

Now if your on windows XP, that also has previous versions, but you need to install the client linked below. Once you install that right-click the file, properties and you will have a previous version tab and hopefully volume shadow copy recorded the change. good luck.
