Hey guys! I must say I have always been fascinated in computers and technology. I've always wanted to build my own computer (never had the cash) and learn everything there is to know about the process. I have a few books on how to do this and I have an understanding of it. I want to make computers my career. ITT Tech offers a Computer and Electronics Engineering Technology. There seems very interesting and pretty much exactly what I'd like to do. My questions are; Are there any books or links that I can read up on to further my knowledge in this field before I actually apply for college? I do not know too much about this, but its what I want to do and I can learn/pick things up very quickly and excel at them. Will this field allow me to have a successful career and make decent money? Anything that will help me prepare will be very helpful. Thank you for your time.

There are loads and loads (mostly free if you search), it really depends on where you think your future lies. Don't expect to become a master of all thing IT, you'll need to focus and specialise if you want a career path. Identify where you think IT (hardware, software or a virtual mix of the two) will be in ten years time and go for it! Sorry to sound curt, but I doubt if there'll ever be a definitive answer to your question.
I do not know too much about this.
If you're going to earn money you'll need to have a basic grasp at the very least. Use your enthusiasm to find out what's going on in your local area now. It may not be cutting edge or bleeding edge, but it'll give you an insight as to where wages are made nowadays. Most of current IT usage is very staid and unremarkable - but is is important and a good source of income for its practitioners.
Will this field allow me to have a successful career and make decent money? Last year, bankers had successful careers and earned decent money...
There will always be a wage to be earned in IT, but don't expect it to be an immediate pathway to fortune.
...unless you are in the right place ant the right time that is!
The very best of luck with your career choice, one thing is for sure the IT industry has a big future; but it's also had a big past that will never come back.
In your enviable position, I would concentrate on the convergence technologies in the voice/data/communications sector given the current global climate. Immediacy and accuracy will be key in the near-future IMHO.
Health & Safety Disclaimer: My crystal ball is now very old and may well be suffering from cataracts, so please look to the future through your own magical lens before making any career decisions. ;)
Good Luck! :)

Old computers are free or nearly so. learning does not require much money certainly not more than you could earn at a part time job flipping burgers or whatever.
