View Full Version : rundll32.exe missing after Windows XP installation ... mouse not detected

I have been trying to reinstall Windows XP over an existing installation, which had become unstable. No matter what I tried, at the end, after Windows was fully installed, I got an error message indicating that "rundll32.exe was missing" ... worse yet, the systemn did not detect a mouse, even though I tried both a USB mouse and a PS2 mouse, and, therefore, I could not try to fix the problem since the mouse was not usable. Finally, I thought, well, perhaps it is a virus after all, and I reformatted the entire HDD and did a clean install of Windows. Same result! I'm at my wits' end now. Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks a million.

Well, rundll32.exe is a critical component of Windows and since you got message saying it was missing right after a reinstall, it seems like you may have a damaged XP disk or infected with the CWS trojan.
Try replacing the file which you can get here:
Extract it and place the rundll32.exe file in C:\Windows\System32.
One that is in place reboot and see if that fixed the problem. Afterwards download CWSShedder which will remove the CoolWebSearch trojan if you are infected with it (CWS trojan is known to delete rundll32.exe).

Did that work?

No that didn't work. I replaced the file with that and restarted. No difference.

Ok, that should have worked. If this happens every time you most likely have a damaged XP disk and it should be replaced. If it is a legit copy, you can use This Link (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;%5Bln%5D;326246) and Microsoft will issue you a new one.
