The software sent fake error messages telling users to "fix their internal sensor soon," and "try putting your laptop near hot steam for several minutes to clean the sensor," Goodrich said.

Post that link on Craigslist and then say.... This is why you do not trust your computer with a $25 tech.

Oh that's quality! People will believe anything if the error looks convincing...

You beat me to it. This is NATIONAL news now. From my local paper:

Adams, MAYBE this will make people think twice before trusting their computer to a $30 tech, but in this economic climate, I doubt it. It sounds like he advertised his services at the university, then installed the software. University students typically don't have much cash. *sigh* All the more reason for people NOT to trust computer repairmen.

Good way to get electrocuted. It reminds me of the model who was tweeting while sitting in her bathtub, then the laptop dropped into the water. Bzzzt. She was found dead, still in the bathtub.

I guess we are going to start seeing on laptops the same labels that we see on hair dryers "Caution: Do not use while in the shower!" or something similar. :D

I actually know several people who put tape over the camera. I thought they were paranoid. Guess they are really smart.

That's actually an urban myth. Mythbusters did an episode debunking this very thing.
