Pointer opening everything when hovering

XP home laptop, SP-3, synaptics touch pad drivers(up to date). when using the touch pad, more often than not, the pointer goes wacko. It opens everything that you move it to, no clicking or hovering required-its immediate. USB mouse works fine. Any ideas on this problem?

i ha d a similar problem with my hp lappy and it turned out to be a corrupted synaptic driver try a re install also try the the settings for the trackpad and see if you can adjust the sensitivity as the pad can see movement as a double or single click occasionally.

I found many different driver versions. I deleted all of synaptics drivers. They are gone from the control panel. The touch pad and pointer seem to work fine with synaptics gone.
