Hi,

I have a laptop running XP. When I ask it to restart it will, no problems. When I ask it to shutdown it just hangs. I have no hardware device problems and have tried disabling all services but it still does the same thing.

Any ideas anyone?

Check the event viewer for any errors when you try to shut down also does this happen even in safe mode? can you give a wee bit more info on where it hangs, is it before or after ending all programs and services? Also when did this start happening because you could just do a system restore if you havent tryed that already.

Is there still an XP status window open saying...windows is shutting down or closing network connections? Or does it not even get that far?

Sorry for being vague. It stops when it says "windows is shutting down". I havn't tried system restore, just because the customer took the laptop to another repair man a year ago with the same problem.

Like JayTech said...does this also happen in safe mode? Or, can you boot windows, disable your antivirus and then do a shutdown and see what happens...?

You can run EndItAll (http://www.docsdownloads.com/enditall-1.htm) to kill all applications except for crucial system services, then try to shutdown. This will at least let you figure out whether it is a third-party software problem or an operating system problem.
