I have a headset.

I tried to use said headset.

The headphones work perferctly and the mic plug is secure in the pink mic jack in the back, but doesn't work.

The mic volume has been unmuted in volume control and everything.

When others try to Skype me, they hang up because the static is so bad that they can't hear.

I went out and bought a new headset.

Guess what? Same problem. T_T;

I'm not sure if it's my sound card or that my mic jack is faulty. :/ My computer is quite old. T_T; So it may be one or the other. I just need to know how to figure out which one it is.. :3 And how to fix it.

Thanks.

Kendal.

As a first analysis, I'd say the dear old soundcard is kaput. The only sensible way of fixing it is to take out the old one and get a cheap, new one - you don't need professional sound recording (...right?) so even a cheap, $15 C-Media soundcard will work for you.

If the sound jacks are on the motherboard itself, that's a slight problem only because it means you'll have to do an extra step - disabling the internal soundcard from the BIOS setup (the one that prompts you to press Del or F2 or some other key during computer startup (usually says Press <key> to enter setup.). After that, the sound card can be installed normally and if all goes well it'll be instantly recognized by the system - and hopefully, your headset will work.
