Is this printer any good? how expensive are the consumables?

I have the hp color lazer 2840 and its been really nice, consumables are not to expensive and the last a lot longer then ink so that is a plus. Also the toner when gets wet after being fused onto the printer does not leak or bleed out and run on the paper where a ink print out would. So if you need flyer's and it rains you should be ok with them posted. Also if you accidentally spill a drink on it they should stay somewhat legible.

We have an HP color lasterjet 4600 in our office. Its a bit bigger than that printer so im sure it uses different cartridges but each cartridge is $200 and it takes 4 of them (black, cyan, yellow, and magenta) so it costs $800 to fill up. Also, and I'm sure this is just a problem with my model but something to be aware of, the toner cartridges tend to leak extra toner when its being used. So once in a while (quite often) you have to clean the inside very well otherwise you get shading on your prints. Another thing to be aware of is that HP's tech support is no good. So if you have a problem you might want to consider a different vendor for maintenance if you cannot do it yourself.

The HP Laserjet 1600 is excellent. I used to work at Staples and we had one of these babies. The colors coming out of that thing were superior to any other laser printer I've ever seen. If you are using Mac though, beware. Some guy told me he had a lot of trouble getting this to play nicely with his Mac. But other than that, I think it's great.
Word of warning, I believe these kind of printers will not work with one cartridge empty so the upkeep is kind of hefty. Make sure you only get it if you need it. I found printing black and white flyers on colored paper works nicely. I have a little HP 1020 personal laser printer. It prints only black and white but it's still very nice and I got it for under $100.

Yea a lot of people don't like how if the color is empty, but they only want to use black, they still have to buy a color cartridge. However since laser toner is a powder that doesn't dry out, rather than a liquid, you can have a cartridge in there and even if you don't use it for a while it won't be a waste.
