MS Updates

I have a clients laptop, its an Averatec 3150P, it has Windows XP Pro w/ SP1 I finall got my SP 2 to install but MS website says there is 97 more critical updates needed. I have tried several times to download the updates, the website shows them being downloaded but when it tries to install them I either get Windows Explorer needs to close or a box saying that the 97 updates were not installed. Should I just give SP3 a shot or have any of you run into this before?

Clear the Download folder in %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution and then recheck for updates.

That seemed to help, somewhat. After all that work they bought a new laptop.
Sorry it has taken so long to tell you thank you. Day job is in overdrive, dont have much spare time.
