Hi everyone I am completely new to working on macs but got a hold of what looks to be an older laptop that I am dinking with. It has Mac OS X version 10.3.9. It has 256mb of ram which doesn't seem like much compared to PC's but thats what makes me think this thing must be old! lol. Anyway it has an 800MHZ Power PC G3 processor and its an Ibook. Was just wanting to do a clean re-install of the thing and was wondering if there is a better OS for it that I can upgrade it to or?? Thanks for guiding me through this thing!!:)

Download Mac Tracker. It'll help you identify the system and tell you the highest OS version it will run.

What is the model number? Does it have any version of mac os on it currently? You may be able to go to 10.4 or 10.5 at most.

800Mhz and a G3? Looks like an early G4 model. Is it an ibook? Anyway, that should be able to run 10.4.11. You can probably upgrade the RAM up to 640MB. I'd have to know more about the specs to be sure. I'm assuming its got 128MB on board RAM with another 128MB chip added in.

You might be able to upgrade it to a Tiger (10.4) from Panther (10.3).

Here's the Mac OS X 10.4 requirements (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1514).
