CASE 1: PC (XP) running slow to load and when it loads its slow to use but sometime it can be fine. (which is the best and free software to use to check and speed up pc?) Also when shutting down an error message pops up but it goes so fast you cant read it (any ideas?)
CASE 2: RUNDLL message comes up after start up (any idea what this could mean and how to correct it?) Also i want to format and create a partition so if i need to format again i wont lose my data, so i can just formart the partition i need to, which do i do first? partition or format?( i have backed up my data so i think i should just do the whole thing??)
Cases are not the same PC
Many thanks if you can help me

Hey Dave.
Case 1: What are the system specs for case 1? In most cases with regards to slow boot/sluggish operation, you probably have too many programs trying to start with Windows. Click Start->Programs->Startup. Anything you don't need to start with Windows can be deleted by right-clicking the item and choose delete or remove.
Download Spybot Search and Destroy from www.safer-networking.org, install it/backup the registry/update Spybot/then run a system scan for spyware. If you have any questions about the results of the scan, or anything at all, I'll check this thread periodically. I wouldn't worry about the little window that pops up during shut-down. It's probably just a program hanging, or not wanting to close for the shut down.
Case 2: DLL errors are common with windows, post the error and I'll try to point you in the right direction. If you have already backed up the data you need from the drive, then the process would be to format the drive, then create 1 or 2 partitions on the drive. It is recommended that all the drive space be used one way or another. So, if you have a 40GB HDD, something like 2-20GB partitions, or 1-30GB and 1-10GB, etc.
The partition question was a little unclear to me, so if I totally missed the actual question, my bad.

Hi TS thanks for getting back to me.
Regarding case one i dont have the specs yet as its all i have been told over the phone, its my cousins pc so when i get chance i will pop round and get the specs.
Case two, heres the error message:
C:\PROGRA~1\NEWDOT~1\NEWDOT~2.DLL
For the partitioning bit, how do i put the whole OS on one part? so if needed i can format that part and my data be safe on the other part.
Hope this helps!
Many thanks again

for partitioning when you set it up setup the main partition and install the OS to it then when you save files or install apps install them to the second partition

Case 2: rundll error...from my experience, it is usually from a trojan that has been caught and quarantined. It is in reference to a registry key to run at startup. You'll need to identify the key and delete it, this should clear the start up error. If you dont' have the experience in dealing with the registry edit tool within windows there is software readily available to aid you with this task. I'm sure a quick search of these forums will uncover more than one of these tools. ;)
