standard file not recognised icon is visible, but Excel doesn't have the Excel (2003) icon.
Excel files are correctly opened by Excel.
I've tried re-assocating Excel files with Excel, but the icon is still of the unrecognised variety.

It may sound like a dumb reply, but I have to ask:
have you tried reinstalling Office 2003
I came across the exact same thing a year or so ago, if memory serves, a reinstall resolved the issue, but I never did find out what caused it.

I suppose the disks are around somewhere, just couldn't be bothered looking for them.

you could try dial-a-fix to flush icons or use tweakui i think that has a function to flush the icons. Worth a shot save you a re-install if it works.

Hello MrMille, Are you seeing icons that are the small white box? And when you click on them, does it try to browse for the executible?
If that is the case; just right click the icon and select "find target". Then find the location of the executible for that particular Office app. (eg...WinWord.exe). I have seen this happen after updates to Office. I hope this is of some use to you. Good kuck.
