View Full Version : Does anyone do Hosted Exchange?

Hi all,
Has anyone experimented with Hosted Exchange? I have a client that needs access to their email where ever they go, without a laptop. They currently use Gmail but don't like it and would prefer to user Outlook or OExpress. I know there are companies that offer hosted exchange out there, however I was wondering about offering it to my customers that have a need for that in my local small business community.
Possible to run OWA on my servers? Ideas? Good reseller programs that offer hosted exchange? Currently I resell email and webhosting through Dreamhost which is great, but they don't do Hosted Exchange. Again Ideas?

I have setup a few of my clients with exchange my mail and the support is excellent.

I offer hosted Exchange 2010 for my customers. Most customer love the anytime/anywhere access to their email and of course the reassurance that their email is backed up 24x7.

I consider our hosted Exchange offering a convenience or value-add offering for our customers. To be competitive, margins are pretty thin so it's definitely not a huge money maker, but does offer a nice bit of recurring revenue.

I'd recommend taking a look into some of the companies offering reseller accounts to find one that meets your needs. Pay attention to their SLA - especially if they haven't moved to Exchange 2010 yet, or are in the middle of their migration.

dont run your own exchange server unless your prepared to keep an insane amount of regular backups aswell as make yourself available for work 24/7 for if/when your exchange drops out or locks up... personally id look at the company and try and assess their needs... Google apps do a great gmail portal where the company can buy their domain use a gmail interface (with customisable logos) for next to nothing per year... and this is all web based so it serves your needs and is a yearly not monthly expense

I'm a "user" not a "seller" of hosted exchange services. I have been happy with my service at both Intermedia and Goddaddy.

I'm a PLR reseller for Intermedia.

Margins are slim, but reliability is great, breadth of services is great (CRM, SharePoint, Compliance options, etc.), support is great, the brand-able control panel is impressive to the clients and easy to use from both an admin and an end-user standpoint.

I'd recommend it. Just having the confidence that there won't be downtime (they promise 99.999% uptime) and no worries about backup makes it worth it to me.

If you don't want to be a reseller (so you don't have to deal with being the middle-man for billing), you can set yourself up as an affiliate and make a one-time commission for each client you recommend.

You're currently popping your email through dreamhost? And your client has outgrown pop email?

We're an Appriver Partner. Their not the cheapest hosted exchange service but the management portal, spam filtering, and customer service are top class.

You can also use Google Apps for Business which is the "poor man's" alternative to exchange.

Dont know if I would call Google Apps a poor man's exchange... how much Google Apps offers in their suite compared to barebone exchange I think is well worth the price tag ($0).

I push Google Apps for any business clients looking to move from onsite email. Google Apps has supported my company and the school district I work for (over 3000+ users) very well so I have no problem recommending them.

also sharepoint, crm and live. Prices are good and returns are not bad.

Appriver is a good company, I can vouch for that. We used them for years for spam and antivirus email filtering. Not as competative as other companies go where small business is concerned, especially where Exchange hosting is concerned.

More and more I'm trying to encourge my clients to go with outsourced Exchange, even if they have SBS 2008 and can provide this service locally.

Wow, lots of good ideas...I'm a Microsoft registered partner, so I'll look into that and the other companies recommened. Just to clear up...no they haven't outgrown Google, they just don't like it. No they aren't using Dreamhost currently. I currently resell dreamhost services.

Any other ideas will certainly be welcome still.

We are an MS Partner too, and looked into MS's BPOS offering awhile back. The thing that that concerned us with MS's offering was that they controlled the end-user billing & pricing and the margins seemed even lower that what we would expect from other providers (Note: as others have mentioned, they're all pretty slim margins). Also at the time, they were still on Exchange 2007.

We haven't looked at MS's offering lately, but just wanted to share our observations when we were evaluating hosted Exchange providers.

Currently I'm in the process of migrating a client with 15+ users over to hosted Microsoft exchange. I'll give an updates as soon as we finish the migration.

I have a lot of other work and planning before I reach the point for the exchange migration so the update most-likely won't be until mid-October

Yes, Currently they have 2 exchange servers in place, with the messages being filter through trend micro for anti-spam/virus. This Client has a colorful mix of custom built computer by an ex-network admin with the cheapest parts he could find (think biostar knockoffs), that was laid-off 2 months ago. After he was laid-off he log-in remotely and started deleting settings in the VPNs, changing logins, removing settings and what not. Its been a nightmare to deal with as nothing is documented, the setup in incredibilty complicated. Most of its not needed. Just going thru invoices and contacting the companys for the software loaded on the servers and checking the microsoft licensing I've already found that this old Admin. cost my client close to $90K is licensing mistakes/incorrect hardware selections and wasted labor.
