Hey everyone working on a macbook a1181 that won't boot in standard or safemode but will boot to single-user mode. The bad thing is they gave me the osx install cd that came with the computer but the damn thing is scratched to hell and won't load up. So I can't repair permissions or archive and reinstall osx. I downloaded diskwarrior and burned the dmg to a dvd on my PC but when I try to boot it the macbook spits it out. I do have macdrive on my computer and I can read all the files just fine. Also I ran fsck -yf while in single user mode, no errors.

Here is the log file obviously loginwindow is crashing but any way to fix it without the osx install disc?, thanks a million.

That's not a logfile, it's a crash-dump report - these are primarily debugging reports and can only provide limited diagnostic information for any OS. I'm not that familiar with Macs, but quick research tells me log files are stored in the /Library/Logs/Console/<uid>/console.log file, where <uid> is the user ID of the currently logged in user.

You should be able to copy DiskWarrior to a flash drive to boot the machine. If you have access to another Mac, just do a disk utility restore from the DiskWarrior disk to a flash drive and it should boot the machine. Might want to disconnect the optical to see if that is what is keeping the machine from booting to the internal drive.

yeah that's a royal pain right there...
let's see...

Thread 0 crashed with X86 Thread State (32-bit):
eax: 0x00000000 ebx: 0x9527ccff ecx: 0xbffff73c edx: 0x951f647a
edi: 0x00000001 esi: 0x00000000 ebp: 0xbffff758 esp: 0xbffff73c
ss: 0x0000001f efl: 0x00000282 eip: 0x951f647a cs: 0x00000007
ds: 0x0000001f es: 0x0000001f fs: 0x00000000 gs: 0x00000037

well you weren't adding anything b/c eax is your 'accumulator register' and there's nothing in it. ebx, your base register is holding the address of the next procedure to execute, or a variable to get, and it's set to 9527ccff. ecx is usually your counting register for loops and stuff, and it's got a typical gigantic countdown loop going on. edx is your data register, it's special when doin math, but obviously them functions aint important here as you already know eax is empty thus no math stuff. next we see edi and esi, which are a bit innerestin... that's the source and destination index registers for string copying, notice esi is all zeros, but esi was a 1. ebp is a (b)ase (p)ointer, notice that like esi and edi it's an index register. it holds the offset amount from ess, which is the stack segment. that's the base location of the stack 000000001f that you see in ess aka ss. so you could add together the ebp address and the ess address and find out where the variable was in memory the cpu was about to utilize. esp is (SP) is your (s)tack (p)ointer that's just an index offset to the top of the stack. so you can add ess and esp and get the address of the top of the stack. uhm eip is your instruction pointer THUS IP. it stores the address offset of the next instruction to be executed, so if you add the code segment register (CS) or (ECS) to the instruction pointer (IP or EIP) then you get the address of the next instruction about to be executed <wonder how that could help?> remember the cs or ecs register just holds the base location (hex address) of where THIS program starts in memory. i guess DS aka the data segment is just one of the four segment registers that contains the base location for the beginning of the storage of variables. ES or extra segment just contains another place to stick the memory address of other variables in hex, in ram. FS just points to the TIB or thread information block, here it's on 0. but what does that really mean, see on 64 bit systems the gs register has replaced the fs register, and that seems to be in use here. Also keep in mind that some cpu's have 64 registers. so this traditional 16 bit stuff is probably too simple. EFL is just the flag register, all 16 bits, or 32 or 64 or 128, or whatever are used for stuff, like if a bit is set then it's 1 and cleared is 0. so bits traditionally used in that flag register are 11 for overflow, 10 for direction 9 for interrupt, 8 for trap, 7 for sign, 6 for zero, 4 for aux carry, 2 for parity and 0 for carry. you dont have to do an xor on the efl register though, each flag can be called with their own identification (thank goodness right?) like df is the direction flag, IF is the interrupt flag, TF is the trap flag (like if your debugging program stop and wait after each instruction if this is SET), of course SF the sign flag just means a negative number is in memory, ZF is the zero flag. Usually only used in loops. like in assembly language if you MOVE cx,04 then decrement it, DEC CX,01, then compare to see if it's zero yet like JZ (jump if zero) to an address. simple assembly stuff. sometimes an OF flag is set (overflow) - but dont let this confuse you, cpu's are really simple, they only do 3 things.
fetch, decode, execute. that's it.
fetch an instruction from memory to cpu ( and wait for it to get to the cpu, then checksum it to make sure that it didn't get corrupted on the trip from ram to the cpu cores)
decode the instruction ( increment program counter, this is where the control unit gets any other varialbes and then passes the isntruction and the values to the ALU )
execute - the alu 'does' the operation code on the values, and gives the results back to the control unit where it sticks them in ram and cpu registers.

what's cool about that, is that the control unit in the core and the math unit in the core can do stuff and not wait on the other one to speed up stuff.

well anyway. so what happened here in this?

that thing that crashed, is a very basic part of the c library - everywhere in the os this stuff is used, so i doubt that crashed, if it did... then we know that's good code right, b/c every other mac uses it, so that would point to failing drive or ram, maybe some freaky virus but that would be rare on apples.

look:---> eip: 0x951f647a cs: 0x00000007

so 0x951f6481

0x95f69000 - 0x960a1ff7 libicucore.A.dylib ??? (???) <afcea652ff2ec36885b2c81c57d06d4c> /usr/lib/libicucore.A.dylib

so it was about to do this when it just went crazy and crashed...

why would it the pc give you the apple blue screen of death? well. that could be a bad file, you did say the cd was so scratched you couldn't hardly read it, did they just re-install, then give up and bring it to you maybe? i dont know. i also thought maybe that c library was bad, maybe. try polishing the cd with 'brasso' in an industrial cd polisher. brass polish is best in the world for unscratching regular cd's.

I did notice the thing right before this last module was HIService framework in memory. So the login is crashing. hmmm, i wonder if that has something to do with motion versus hibernation and a bad file.

i promise this is the last thing i'll say.

When I troubleshooted abends on mainframes, we printed the entire dump, even if it was 2000 pages or whatever. That way we could go to the locations in memory (maybe printed on page 1,537 for example) and we could convert it to assembly language, and see what caused it and what could be done to fix it. Obviously you dont need to print it, you can just edit it on the pc in an editor to find the area that caused it, but in other words, a real dump on any cpu should be at least a thousand pages or more. What you have here is called a "mini dump" i think, and it's like a few pages of status information.

it's very unusual for this to happen at startup. the model you said is a macbook so it could be from 2006 to present that's only 4 years, but still hardware can go bad in 4 years if it's dropped or kicked around even. i'm just wondering myself.

try the easy stuff first. you said you ran fsck and got no disk errors. interesting. but does that rule out all disk hardware failure. or just file system problems? ;)

Fsck just generally rules out directory structure problems. Disk Warrior is a much more powerful utility for untangling a directory structure or sniffing out a bad drive. The point is to get the machine to boot to something, if possible. But of course, even if it doesn't boot to anything, then that's telling us something as well, but once again in this case we don't even have the resources to rule that out. Macs are really easy to troubleshoot when you've got the right tools, and believe me it doesn't take much. You can even very easily load OSX on a flash drive, usb/firewire external HD, SD card (for models with a SD card slot) to try to boot that machine, but if you don't have the bare essentials (and I say bare essentials because it really doesn't take much) to create these types of resources, then we are going to sit here and throw guesses around.
