Why would you be using suppliers in Ireland?

01-25-2008, 08:33 PM
Some UK suppliers won't ship to Ireland. Places like scan.co.uk certainly didn't, but I'm not sure if that's still the case.

hext, can you give me an example of some good prices from computer2000? I signed up to Ingram Micro a year ago and their prices were rubbish. Unfortunately I'm not VAT registered yet so I can't sign upto computer2000.

IIRC, Scan have been shipping to Ireland for ten years.

Have you guys tried Dabs? they setup an Irish specific site about a year ago.

I was surprised to see Sharptext on the list above, are they good?

I'm dealing with all of the above for a number of years and would recommend them. Also, Dell do great deals if you're doing volume. Wayne Earls in business sales is the man.

Why do a lot of these companies require that you are in the indutry to buy from them? Surely they are just cutting down their potential to get sales then?

02-03-2008, 07:54 PM
Look at it from their point of view...
They want continuous, preferably volume sales
They want to know that they're dealing with professionals who're not going to go mental the first time they get a doa part
They don't want the hassle of supporting end users.... That's what we do...
And they risk alienating their existing trade customer base by dealing with non-trade customers.
Being a trade-only supplier can be a very good way to do business and they can be very good people to do business with.

If you're serious about this business you will end up dealing with them eventually, anyhow, because you will become part of the "trade". In the meantime, the price difference between a trade supplier and the big online shops is minimal. If you're getting into this business to make lots of money selling computers/peripherals/parts then leave now before you lose your shirt. The Dixon's, Best Buys etc. will have lower prices every time. You CANNOT compete on price, you MUST compete on some other basis, be it locality, expertise, service level, flexibility...whatever... just not price.
