Winternals Disk Commander and an external USB drive

Guys, do any of you have experience using Disk Commander and an external drive to store the recovered data? good/bad experience?

what I'm trying to figure out is how to get my external usb drive recognised.

I'm starting to pull my hair out at this stage.

I have used Winternals ERD 2005 from a boot CD and really just to unlock a few machines users changed local passwords on.

I gave up on Winternals Disk Commander, and bought GetDataBack instead.
I like GDB.

I have used ERD commander and had no problem with USB drives. I just opened the Explorer app and there were the drives.
