I have a shared sever in my office to file storage what I am looking for is a free program that gives me desktop access from my primary computer to allow me full control over it. Any ideas?

Do you want to access the server over a local network or the internet?

The obvious choices are UltraVNC, TightVNC, RealVNC. I prefer UltraVNC (http://www.uvnc.com/) though. If it's the first time you've used such a program, you'll need to setup port forwarding to the server :)

Then any of those programs will do the job :) You might need to configure your router still, depending on the make/model, but it's straight forward. If you want any more help, just ask. There are plenty of guides online too.

What os is the server running?

Just open up remote desktop connection and enter in the server or IP name, connect and login as admin.

Just open up remote desktop connection and enter in the server or IP name, connect and login as admin.

Prior to this step, make sure under system properties > remote > remote desktop is enabled. Also the administrator or whichever account you will be using should have a password. If I am not mistaken, an account with a password is required by default. In other words, the administrator or whichever account on the local computer (server) should have a password. Then you should be able to open up remote desktop connection and connect to the server.

My mistake, I overlooked the post regarding the machines being XP Home. You are right, only XP Pro can be the server, but XP Home can be the client machine.

You can always use Logmein, GotoMyPC, or I haven't Tried this one yet but Its called Instant Housecall. The first two work great, however you will need an Internet Connection for them to work.

Use one of the VNC variants then if remote desktop doesn't work.

I use UltraVNC.

If you are looking for something that does not require unattended access, try Techinline Remote Desktop. Much lower priced than LogMeIn, VNC, Citrix, etc
