Hello All,

I am here to ask you guys a question as this problem has come up twice in the past week week.... I had 2 separate people come to me with computers which would not boot at all due to missing/corrupted system files such as system.ini or w/e.... it ask for the windows installation disc i find out that each were running Windows XP Professional (retail or EM not sure) SP2, i pop in my Windows XP Professional Corporate disc as they don't have their disc and when i run repair or "R" when booting from the installation disc it copies the files and when it reboots i see the windows installation screen saying it is installation  is it because i am running the wrong windows xp installation disc to repair it or what ? i know for a fact i did not attempt to install windows.... is there any easier way to fix these such errors or any advice from you experience techs out there for such events in these errors ?

It might be that your running the wrong disc.... I'm not quite experienced in this just installed XP for first time a week ago. Well anyways you could always just back up files and then do a clean install deleting partion and creating a new one then putting back all the files. Please don't do this unless some one else backs me up!!!!

If you are doing the second repair option, and not the first "R" (Recovery Console) option then: the sequence after the deleting of system files and the copying of the files, it should go into what looks like an installation screen and sometimes asks for a CD Key, which is normal for a second option repair function.

Stupid me i should have known that i repaired my machine like that a few months back :o I wish i could remember all the commands to backup and restore fresh system files from the windows installation disc i know you backup system.ini ect... and copy new ones from the disc to the system32 folder but i forget all those commands and files, to me repairing it under the second option seems easier :p

BTW: Thanks for the great and helpful response guys! Oh and happy holidays :)

Hey, something I found helpful is the chkdsk utility in recovery console. I had a registry error last week at work and ran this command on it and fixed the problem.

Try "sfc /scannow" from the command prompt
