How can internet settings be optimized to get a faster speed. Is there software or things built within windows to get a faster speed.

Not sure if it really boasts speed or not but supposibly using firefox with the fasterfox addon is told to increase browser performance.

You cannot change your internet speed unless you have cable and you "uncap" it and thats illegal.
There are some changes in firefox that you can do to make it a lot faster: go to the address bar and type "about:config" without quotes. then change these settings.
network.http.max-connections: 48
network.http.max-connections-per-server: 24
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy: 12
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server: 6
network.http.pipelining: true
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests: 8
network.http.proxy.pipelining: true
exit firefox and restart it, you will see a real increase in speed.
