Got a laptop from customer today, wouldn't recognize hard drive on boot. I pulled it out, attached to my machine using USB drive enclosure and backed up all the data. So far so good. I put the hard drive back into customers laptop and and tried booting from windows cd. No luck, BSOD. Tried again booting into BartPE - BSOD. Then booted into Ultimate Boot CD, started from diagnostic, moved to partition tools, then to low-level editing. Most of them either crashed or gave me no useful information. This is Hitachi Deskstar hard drive, but even their "Drive Fitness Tool" crashed trying to detect this drive. So now I resorted to HDDErase, it's wiping disk now and should be finished in couple hours. I have my fingers crossed.
