Thanks so much for this post. really helped me out. I am having a problem w/ removing about:blank. I have use HJT as you had posted, but could not find the same entries that you had. A couple of times I would find one R1 value that ended in say, defualt about:blank. But, even when I removed these I still can't seem to keep the about:blank from loading when I start IE. Any other options that you know of for setting the about:blank back to default?

You have posted two different problems here. One common problem is that people can never set their home page to anything else other than about:blank. If they set it to google the next time they load IE it would be about:blank.

Another problem is when about:blank is hijacked and people want to set it back to default (meaning no links in it or other nasties).

I am going to assume you meant that your home page keeps resetting itself back to about:blank.

When a PC does this it typically means its still infected with something. Have you run a virus scan?

Some programs like SpybotS&D have the option to lock down the current homepage, making it impossible to set anything else as the homepage. Usually, it's the about:blank page, so if you're running S&D, check the options.

Remove the above line with Hijack This! then manually delete the file. Its Spyware (abetterinternet.com).

This thing got me too, the only thing that worked for me was to do a system restore a day or two earlier and it would work for a week or two then come back, system restore another week or two. I do not know if it brought it'self back to life or if I somehow kept re-downloading it. I suspect it brought it'self back to life.

Anyway I figured the company created thier own spyware to sell thier anti spyware from thier website, no way I would buy thier product, I did send them an email to customer support about the problem, they responded quickly with an email.

Greetings!

How To Remove

- First you will need to print out these instructions as you will be
required to close all windows in order to do the fix.
- Now, download SmitFraudFix.zip
(http://www.technibble.com/downloads/removal-tools/SmitFraudFix.zip)
and save it to your desktop. Once it has downloaded, double click on it which
will extract it. Do not run the actual program yet as it must be done in safe
mode.
- Load into Windows Safe mode by restarting the computer and just before
the Windows XP screen comes up, press F8 and choose safemode.


Once in Safemode:

- Close all open windows and open the SmitFraudFix folder which is on
your desktop and double click the SmitFraudFix.cmd file which will start the
removal process. This whole cleanup process can take a few hours depending on
your computer so please be patient.
- You will see a blue screen with white text with a series of options,
Press number 2 on your keyboard and press Enter key which will choose the
“Clean (Safe mode recommended)” Option.
- The program will go though a series of processes to clean your computer
including the disappearance of your desktop icons for a split second. One it
is finished it will open up the Disk Cleanup program. This will clean up all
Temporary Internet Files, Temp folders and other files which may have been
left over by the infection. When it is finished it should close automatically.

- When Disk Cleanup is complete you will be given the option “Do you want
to clean the registry? Y or N”. Press the Y button on your keyboard and press
the Enter Key
- When the registry cleanup is finished you will get a red screen which
will say “Computer will reboot now, Close all Applications”. Press Spacebar
and let it restart the computer. Once rebooted you will be shown a log file
with a list of all the files that were removed. Close this.
- You should now have succesfully removed the Antispylab Infection
- Be sure to visit the Windows Update site at
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and get all critical updates to minimise
your chances of getting this again.

There are other odd business plans. People speculate that Norton makes its own viruses so that you buy their product to remove them.

Hey,

My computer has been going heywire for the last day. I noticed a "runsrv32" file name popping up, and searched it, which led my to this article.

I'm not computer minded at all, so Im not going to attempt your removal process myself. The thing that I'm now curious about, is that my problem, has all the same "symptons" as the one you described, except it appears to be a little different. It doesnt take me to "Antispywarelab" , but to "Antispywarebox." And there is no "winsrv32" file, on the runsrv32.

Could it be that I have a newer "version" of this thing?

Is there anyway I could tell?

Any help would be appreciated :)

It seems like a different variant of it, however seems it can still be removed by SmitFraudFix in the exact same way you would remove AntiSpyLab.

Try the AntiSpyLab instructions to remove it and see how it goes. The instructions are pretty easy to do:

I tried the smitfraud program, but it didnt run through properly, and was really quick.

It got up to a disk cleanup, but then just stopped. I was in safemode as far as I know. Would this mean that it won't get rid of it, or that I was doing something wrong :S

Would my posting a hijackthis log file from before and after show if the program has done anything ?

I've been told that re-installing Xp will get rid of it (along with everything else) will this work, or will it just keep coming back?

Well the lines that the trojan installs are still there:

However that is not to say it wasnt removed as the actual files could have been removed but the registry entries remained. Are you still getting signs of the infection? if so, what?

Yes, the runsrv32.exe, runsrv32.dll and a.exe files return everynow and then.

The about:blank hasnt gone away either, except that now it doesnt direct me to the antispyware page, it is just a blank page.

Boot up safe mode, delete the following in Hijack This and manually find and delete the files that I have marked to be deleted in bold. Once removed, while still in Safe mode, run SmitFraudFix again as you did before.

I believe this line brought the infection back, its designed to look like part of an adobe product, but its malicious.

Excellent! Success!

I followed the steps, removed the lines in HijackThis!

When I went to manually delete some of the files werent there, the adobepnl.dll being one :S

I ran smitfraud again, then rebooted and all signs are gone. Even the about:blank has dissapeared.

Yes, I did. Before I realised that it actually wasn't windows telling me of the spyware etc. I completley removed it though...I think

Oh, another note. While the infection was still thriving, I noticed in process explorer that "user32.dll" was said to be a "Tojan Warehouse." It doesnt appear to be running anymore, now that I've cleaned house. Would it have been part of the infection ?

It depends on its location, User32.dll is a legit windows process provided its in the c:\windows\system32 folder. If it is anywhere else or named something like Usr32.dll or User32.dIl then it is suspicious.
