Great article.
One important thing that has been fundamental to marketing my business has been networking at a regular breakfast meeting. There are a number of organisations out there that you can join. BNI, Business Swap, your local Chamber of Commerce are all possibilities.
Make some enquiries and you may find a locally based networking club like the one I started after experiencing the value of networking in other clubs. Usually the best types of clubs (for me) are ones which have one spot for each business type. You really get to know each other and build good friendships. Networking is a long term project as people will only refer their business and personal contacts to you if they have built up trust in you.
The club also becomes a support network as often they will have a business discussion portion of the meeting where issues can be talked about in a group that has a large collective experience.

I went to a few BNI meetings and they look like they would be useful. The BNI's I went to however already had a webdeveloper and a computer technician and I didnt really follow it up after that. The entry fee for it was a little bit of a turn off. Although I can see that the entry fee would be worth it because of the amount of referral work you would get I would rather exhaust the many free networking options first.

Graeme, are you a BNI member?

The advantages that the internet brings to the market today are truly impressive. A business owner can create a business and market it effectively for a small cost.
