I needed to connect a vista machine to a simple password protected shared folder on a linux file server. Could not make windows connect and there is no group policy editor on vista home premium. The important point is that you need to do this. Edit this key's value to equal 1
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Lsa\LMCompatibilityLevel

Level 1 is described below in this document.
http://www.windowsreference.com/windows-vista/how-to-get-group-policy-editor-in-vista-home-edition/

It works immediately. You don't have to reboot.

Are you using Samba for the Linux sharing. I haven't noticed this problem on my Vista PC, but I am using Ultimate not Home, so It may just not apply.
