Hello everyone, im just curious about this. I know that the new macs are intel based and i was wondering if anyone knew if you can run mac natively on a windows pc that is also intel based. Anyone know anything about this?

From what i hear it is impossible to run it natively but if you don't already know about emulating a Mac On Your PC google an emulator tool called PearPC, otherwise the answer is no it is not possible sure they are both intel but there are other differences in hardware and such that make it impossible right now.

In the beginning to make OS X work with Intel they worked on the OS on a Dell box. That OS got leaked and passed around the hackers sites for awhile but I haven't seen it for a year or two. It works very well on Dell precision PC's but it's unofficial and outdated by now.

It's definitely possible to run the Mac OSX on a PC (even an AMD based one, though Intel is much easier). I'm not talking about emlulation.

You can buy the Leopard disk and patch it yourself or get prepatched versions. There is a question about the legality of this (well, I'm pretty sure it's illegal), even if you have bought the OS from Apple. I believe the EULA states that you are only allowed to run it on Apple branded hardware. Some clever folks think that by sticking a Mac sticker on their case it becomes Apple branded, but somehow I don't think this will hold in court.

If you go this route the best bet is to use hardware that overlaps with the Mac line because finding drivers can be a royal pain. For example, I've seen 10.5.2 running very stable on an HP Pavillion with a Core 2 Duo (same as a MacBook Pro).

If you want a machine that dual or triple boots (say Vista / XP / Mac OSX) your best bet is to buy a Mac and then whatever Windows based OSes you want. You can partition your hard drive and then install whatever you want without having to worry about the legality.

I haven't seen it running on a pc lately, last time I did it was very slow and buggy. Yeah I think it violates the EULA agreement. Of course the new Safari 3.1 for windows says the same thing:

2. Permitted License Uses and Restrictions.
A. This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on a single Apple-labeled computer at a time.

that's funny that the windows version of safari says it must be be run on apple hardware...guess someone wasn't proofreading?

anyhow, for those who are interested in jumping into the whole mac os x on a pc, here's a wikipedia link with some more information:

Definitely Doable. Runs as fast as Win 7 with no issues.

Here is a link to an excellent guide for those interestted in experimenting.

Can also be setup to dual and triple boot with Win 7 and Unbuntu.

Very good way to get experience with Mac without laying out big bucks for
Mac hardware.

Not only is it doable but its being done.

The problem is loading osx is different then loading windows. With windows you configure the OS to suit the hardware on osx you have to build the hardware to suit the OS.

I run osx on a Dell mini 10v netbook. It actually runs very well. You have to have a system that is almost identical in system specs as a real mac in order for it to work natively. I use NetbookInstaller to set mine up with completely unmodified osx installation media.

Just a warning there are many people that don't agree with doing this and the odds of getting flamed are very high. There have been many posts in this forum deleted because mention of osx on something other then a mac. Personally apple is not loosing a customer with me, there is no way I will ever pay there inflated prices. However, I have osx loaded so I can learn the operating system and be able to support clients that use osx. In the case of OSX it runs great on a PC, it just takes some research to set it up.
