A customer brought an HP dv6748 laptop because the hard drive was defective. I replaced it and reinstalled Vista 32 Bit. Installed all drivers. But when I tried to install the sound driver, I got the message "No device detected". Sure enough, when I went to the device manager, there is no sound device detected. All the drivers installed without a hitch, and there are no unknown devices or exclamation marks in the device manager. Now, the first couple of times I rebooted the computer the audio was working, but after that I just get the "No Audio Output Device is Installed" message in the system tray.

I tried reinstalling the OS and still got the same problem. I googled the issue and it seems that many people have it, but most of the time there is at least a device detected in the device manager.

What are the chances that this is a hardware problem and that the sound card needs to be replaced?

Sound is certainly an issue on HP laptops whether it's a system that came with vista and you're going to xp or vice versa. A reload using the original discs should work. If you are installing the same os as was installed and not using the original disks or recovery partition then you need to install the latest HD audio drivers both from HP and microsoft. You will often have to try several versions of the drivers to see which one works. Email me and I can send you driver files that usually work for me: danc@usalaptoprepair.com

HOWEVER: If there are not even question marks in device manager then you either have a hardware conflict(reinstall but do the audio drivers first this time) or the sound chip really is toast which personally I've never encountered.

Ok, I decided to install windows 7 just to test the sound, and Windows 7 does detect the audio device. It appears as High Definition Audio Device.

However, there is no sound coming from the speakers, or from headphones plugged into the speaker port.

EDIT: I restarted the computer and now Windows 7 says there is no audio device installed, just like vista...

Unknown Device Identifier (http://www.zhangduo.com/udi.html) should help you out here...if I read the post right that is.

I experienced the same problem with a hp 6000. "No audio device detected", I rebooted once and it worked but the second time it didn't (just like you) and a bunch of diagnostic time to realize that the problem was the audio card. Because it is integrated you have to replace the motherboard.

That's what I was afraid of. Oh, well.

Check if there is a BIOS update, once my hp pavilion sound stop working and since it was under warranty i sent it back to hp and they only upgraded the bios and it worked again.

I tried that. The latest bios was already installed, but I reinstalled it anyways.

the customer has 3 choices to get the sound back
1. replace mobo
2. use an external sound card via usb, which can also be attached internally if your soldering skills are sharp and there's space inside the laptop
3. buy a new laptop
