View Full Version : Vista/Windows 7 password reset methods
What are you currently doing to reset passwords in Vista and Windows 7?
It used to be fairly easy (at least with XP) when a customer had forgotten their password to login as an administrator and change it that way. If that didn't work then something like Ophcrack would usually bail me out.
But I have noticed with Vista (not much experience of W7 yet) the administrator account is always secured and Ophcrack and other password reset tools are pretty hit and miss, and sometimes screw up the user profile.
Are there any newer methods out there?
Thanks

Although I cannot recall the actual name of the program, I have a bootable cd that does it. You basically start the computer, boot from the CD and are given multiple options to reset any account on the computer. I have used it with Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows Vista & Server 2003.
I am not sure if I have the link, but I did see a link for it on here a couple of month's ago. Try doing a search on the forums for "password reset".

I was looking at their software products today ever since you mentioned them the other night. Besides the active boot disk, do you use any other software by them and if so how do you like it?

I also tried it on a test box, no problems. Did not realize it was so popular, I have been using it for years (thought it was my little secret )

Would that be Packard Bell? I seem to have a lot of problems with those.
The Offline NT Password editor is something I've also had on boot CD for a long time, but it has been far from 100% for me, unfortunately.

Honestly I have not, I can't say I wouldn't or can't but I tend to have so many tools to use that I stick with what I know I guess, the GUI is awesome and the password removal portion is SO simple and so FAST though I can't imagine using anything else, I love that I can simply clear a password and not have to make a new and can clear all users passwords so easily. Here is a pic via a google search of the desktop: Note the small keys icon (password removal) ;)

Sounds good, I'm going to give the demo a shot. It seems like a very useful tool all the way around. Thanks.

I've used the other mentioned here, NT Pass, this is by far the most easy, fastest, and simplest I have seen, def beats ERD although similar somewhat and Trinity as well without a doubt. Be nice to hear back on your thoughts once you've tried it.:D
