Hi All,

I got a laptop here that initally during windows has a keyboard/mouse but as the system loads it stops in that the keyboard and mouse no longer respond (note I dont think its frozen as various icons are still chugging away in there animations).

Keybaord and mouse work fine in safe mode. Sounds like a software fault to me at this point.

I tried a external mouse - did not help.

So I reinstall XP onto this machine. Get to the point where I enter username and and organisation - No kbd or mouse again. This time a external mouse does work - but of course I still need a keybaord.

Any ideas as to what might be causing this?

Cheers

I think it must be software as everything works fine off the Ubuntu live CD.

Note the keyboard and mouse are not wireless. How would this still affect a fresh install of XP?

if they are USB, try using the old kind, and not through an adaptor. See if that works.

Gotta be honest though, any ideas that I had you killed with the fresh install and Live CD.

Doubtful it is far enough in the load to launch on-screen keyboard, then the mouse would let you proceed... hmmm

PS/2 or USB keyboard?

Which every one it is, try the other

Yeah it is a laptop so no PS2 or USB issues.

I have gone back to thinking its hardware cause the win7 clean instal has suffered from the same prob.

I think it must be the keyboard/mouse io chip on the mobo if such a chip exists?

The southbridge controls the user controls. As well as USB, CLock, PCI, APM etc.
It would be a longshot (but it looks like you are at the longshot point) try flashing the southbridge firmware if you can locate it. Or perhaps flashing the bios.

Reworked southbridge with a BGA machine. Works sweet now.
