By now, most Windows based users are used to security patches being released on the first Tuesday of every month. However, Microsoft recently released a patch in record time, the patch was released 3 days after learning about the hack.

What was so important? Was it hole exploited by a virus which is sweeping the globe? Was it an exploit that allows hackers to take over systems? No, we have to wait for the first Tuesday of the month for those patches.

It was in response to a hacker developing a program called FairUse4WM that strips copy protection from Windows Media DRM 10 and 11 files. This isnt an exploit as digital rights management isnt something people want on their files, people want to be able to put the music they brought on their PC onto their Mac and dont want to get a patch to stop that.

It is clear that Microsoft priority is not security. For them this is a big deal because it effects their relationship with major record labels because music can now be ripped onto other devices such as Ipods which record companies do not want, and will blame Microsoft for not protecting their licenses.

The system didnt stay patched for long because FairUse4WM 1.2 now gets around Microsofts patch. I wonder how long it will be until Microsoft releases another patch and how long it will be until FairUse4WM for defeat it again.
