Windows Home Server PP3

The third power pack for Windows Home Server (WHS) will be released in five days. It was originally scheduled for October 22 or earlier. However, Microsoft said on September that additional testing is required for “the absolute highest level of product quality” so the project was delayed.

If Automatic Update is enabled on the operating system, it will be installed automatically says Microsoft.

The ability to suppress backup warnings and waking up a Windows 7 machine at a scheduled backup time as well as instructing it to sleep after the backup finishes are two of the new features of Power Pack 3.

2,000 Indian companies have or in the process of installing Windows 7. Infosys, Wipro, Maruti, Bangalore, and Manipal University are some of these companies.

“We also see a reasonable amount of Windows XP (which has been around for eight years) on machines. We expect the natural refresh cycle over the next 12-24 months,” says Microsoft’s corporate vice-president, OEM. Microsoft’s target is to have 7 installed on over 100 PC models.

“We have reached around 80 PC models. The target is well within our reach,” Steven Guggenheimer asserts.

XP Sales Halted in China

A court has ruled that certain fonts in Microsoft’s Windows operating system infringe on an intellectual property of a Chinese firm. Therefore, the 1st Intermediate People’s Court of Beijing ordered Microsoft to stop selling XP in China.

The Chinese fonts belong to Zhongyi Electronics and Microsoft believes its license agreement with the firm covered in full their use of the fonts.

Those fonts are not included with Vista and 7.

Windows 7 Remote Vulnerability

A denial of service vulnerability in Windows 7 is currently being investigated by Microsoft.

The article at The Register notes that the crash would happen without a visible indication that something is wrong with the user’s PC.

Laurent Gaffié has posted a proof of concept code. The white hat security researcher writes, “Whatever your firewall is set to, you can get remotely smashed via IE or even via some broadcasting nbns tricks, [with] no user interaction.”

He previously highlighted flaws that have a greater risk in terms of code execution two months ago.

No Exchange Server 2007 Support

Exchange Server 2007 will no longer be supported on the latest Windows Server. The company’s decision may force users to upgrade to the 2010 version of Exchange Server.

Today, at Berlin Germany, Microsoft delivered Exchange Server in a conference. This version has a universal inbox and an improved productivity of 20 percent as well as 70 percent of “cost savings”.

“If we cannot meet our mandate of using the same OS for all servers and a standard collaborative mail server architecture from Microsoft, then we will have to look at other offerings,” wrote Derek who is a customer of Exchange 2007.

Windows 7 Sales Results

Windows 7 sold more than three times compared to Vista’s launch according to a retail marketing research.

Stephen Baker of NDP Group said, “I would call it pretty good, but I wouldn’t call it great.”

“The fact of the matter is that prior to the launch, there were a lot of operating systems out there. When Vista launched, you didn’t see a lot of Windows Millennium PCs. Windows 7 will be more of a long haul,” he added.

The revenue of Windows 7 is only an 82% increase over Vista.

Windows 7 Upgrade Hack Legality

Eric Ligman of Microsoft is sending a message this week to bloggers that although it is technically possible to install a full version of Windows 7 using a Windows 7 upgrade version, it does not mean that it is legal.

“For those of you without an existing Windows license to upgrade from, you should be aware that an upgrade license by itself is not a license to install and run Windows on your computer,” he wrote in a blog post.

“In order to upgrade, you need to have a qualifying license to upgrade from. Again, that’s why it is called an ‘upgrade,’” he added.

Hotmail Blocks NHS Addresses Again

nhs.uk email addresses have been blocked by Microsoft’s Hotmail service once again. The problem also occured in May. However, the problem is now fixed.

“The issue was caused by a high volume of SPAM messages being sent to Windows Live accounts which triggered Microsoft’s anti-spam software to block some emails, Microsoft has since liaised with the NHS to implement new anti-spam and anti-virus systems which will prevent this from happening again,” said a Microsoft spokesman.

A spokeswoman from the Department of Health said, “As soon as NHS Connecting for Health (NHS CFH) became aware of the issue, immediate steps were taken to rectify the matter.”
