Instead of having a fake Facebook page to collect the victims passwords (phishing), the email is sent with a malware attachment. The malware is known as “Bredolab” which is a Trojan downloader. In the two computers I repaired today, Bredolab downloaded some rogue antivirus products. However, some sites are saying that it also downloads a password stealing trojan.

If you see it onsite, Malware Bytes seems to deal with the Trojan once you kill the main executable (at least the rogue antivirus variants). Be sure to tell your clients to change their passwords after the infection has been removed as well.

Facebook Password Reset Malware

When you visit it, you’ll see your typical “You have 100 viruses” scareware.

Once installed, the malware product appears to be the rogue antivirus “CleanUp Antivirus”.

As Patrick said “I’ll bet its making them a fortune”. Such an innocent query with a malicious site as the top result. If you ever do encounter this infection, BleepingComputer.com have removal instructions for Cleanup Antivirus.

“Dancing with the Stars Lineup 2010″ Malware

Movie Maker versions 2.1, 2.6, and 6.0 are affected on Windows XP, Vista, and 7. Producer 2003 is also affected by the same bug in Movie Maker but the company has not released a patch for this software yet.

The Movie Maker bug is exploited by opening a malicious .mswmm file. It can received by web download or e-mail attachment. XP shipped with version 2.1 and Vista users have version 6.0 when the operating system (OS) shipped.

The patch does not let a user’s OS automatically open .mswmm files.

The Excel versions that are affected are XP, 2003, and 2007 in Windows. Mac versions 2004 and 2008 are also affected.

The article at PCWorld notes that two security holes present in Internet Explorer are not yet fixed. One of the holes affect Windows 2000 and XP users. No known attacks have been reported but users are advised to be cautious when a site asks him or her to hit the key ‘F1′ on the keyboard.

The second flaw was just announced today. This bug does not need the user to hit F1 or a different key.

Excel and Movie Maker – Patched

The team behind the spam sets up a Facebook page where it encourages a user to become a fan of its page. Then, it encourage the user’s friends to become fans of the page by letting the user invite them via a handy button. When a user do this process, it would supposedly increase his or her chances of being accepted for the iPad’s “Research Team”.

After all of those things occur, the next step shows a page that looks like an official Apple webpage. However, a pop-up survey would show up right after.

The pop-up survey includes a form to fill in a user’s contact information and it is trying to sign up the user for a premium rate cellphone service that charge approximately $10 a week.

This Facebook page was disabled very promptly after the author of the article Graham Cluley alerted Facebook’s security team.

Scams like these also happen on other social media sites such as Twitter. Five screenshots are included in the article. They show the Facebook page, a user’s invite form, the survey, the twitter post, and the webpage that users would see after clicking on the twitter post.

Bogus iPad Offer on Facebook

The company is also allowing a free upgrade to 2010 if a user buys a 2007 version starting today. Those who will update later need to download the Office 2010 files from Microsoft’s site or get a DVD which includes fees.

Office 2010’s Early Release

“We believe that the bug primarily causes a crash, and that exploiting the vulnerability to execute code is extremely difficult, if not impossible,” said an Opera spokesman.

“In our testing, DEP mitigates the problem and should protect the system,” he added.

DEP stands for data execution prevention and it is not turned on by default according to the article at The Register. The article includes a link to Windows XP, Vista, and 7 users to protect themselves from the bug.

Opera Bug

“This is indicative of the on and off cycle that Microsoft uses. Last month was more OS related, this month they’re patching some applications,” said Andrew Storms of nCircle Network Security.

The two updates are rated as “important”. The vulnerabilities that these two patches fix include a way for attackers to insert malicious code in machines.
