BitDefender has announced the release of an open Mobile Antivirus v2 Beta, designed to protect Symbian-based cellphones from viruses and malware targeting SymbianOS. The download requires a registation at the provider’s site.

F-Prot reports a flood of W32/Warezov variants, with eight discovered from Sept. 9th to Sept. 12th. All are reported as mass-mailing worms which collect addresses from documents on the infected computer and using their own SMTP mailing engine to spread the infection.

The Kaspersky Virus List has published a Top 20 list for August 2006. By far the most common infections are by W32/Netsky, W32/Nyxem and W32/Mydoom variants, with specific variants covering almost 50% of all infections for that month.

The Sophos threat analysis center reports a new worm on the net - the W32/Sdbot-CPP. The strain is troublesome because it roots itself in the registry, opens access to the computer and allows it to be used as a DDOS client. The protection against a keylogger and credit-card number stealer, Troj/Bankem-Z has also become available, along with protection against W32/Rbot-FNA, a spyware worm combining the effects of the above two.

SpywareBlaster has released a database on Sept. 14th, with a grand total of 6598 items in the protection database.

Spybot Search&Destroy has published a new detection rule database. No new bad products have been added to the database, with the grand total of 5683 in the total list.
