Cell Phone Marketing Scam

Beth Jones posted a blog post at Sophos about an odd tweet at Twitter that appears every couple of hours. The tweet includes a link but it changes from time to time although the included text which is “Haha, look at this vid” does not.

When visitors click on the link, they will be redirected to a fake YouTube page that warns them to verify their age using their cell phone since the video may contain inappropriate content.

Jones notes that this may be a way for the scammers to try to sell the users a “long term auto insurance” or other similar scams.

Windows 7 Upgrade Hack Legality

Eric Ligman of Microsoft is sending a message this week to bloggers that although it is technically possible to install a full version of Windows 7 using a Windows 7 upgrade version, it does not mean that it is legal.

“For those of you without an existing Windows license to upgrade from, you should be aware that an upgrade license by itself is not a license to install and run Windows on your computer,” he wrote in a blog post.

“In order to upgrade, you need to have a qualifying license to upgrade from. Again, that’s why it is called an ‘upgrade,’” he added.

Ninite.com – Repair Tool of the Week

Reloading Windows and installing various applications is something that Computer Technicians do all the time. While we can streamline our Windows installs using something like nLite, there isnt really a good way to automate the installation of multiple applications. Sure, some technicians make use of .BAT files or a scripting language like AutoIT but the code is often too difficult for some Technicians. This is where Ninite comes in.

Ninite.com (formerly Volery) is a simple tool for Windows that will automatically download all the latest versions of the software you choose from its directory, then install them silently (as in, you shouldn’t see the installers or asked any questions). Some of the software you will see in their directory is Firefox, Thunderbird, VLC, Foxit Reader, Avast, AVG, Flash Plugin, CCleaner, 7zip and much more. This program will not choose not to install the spammy toolbars/search pages that comes with certain software like Foxit Reader.

Fedex Scam

Sophos has detected a scam about Fedex. The message notes that someone has sent a package to the user but it was not delivered in time since the address of the user is wrong. Therefore, it wants the user to print an invoice that is attached on the email.

Prashant Kumar, the writer of the article at Sophos, notes that the message is exactly the same as last year’s Fedex scam. However, the attached malware is different. The file is detected as Mal/EncPk-KP and it is the most recent incarnation of fake anti-virus according to Kumar.

Apple will support Windows 7 in Boot Camp mode that runs on Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

“Apple will support Microsoft Windows 7 (Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate) with Boot Camp in Mac OS X Snow Leopard before the end of the year. This support will require a software update to Boot Camp,” the company said on its website.

Those who have Intel-based Macs that were manufactured in 2006 are out of luck since the company would not support them in this issue.
