Hacker Safe Certification

An article has been posted yesterday at The Register about McAfee’s “Hacker Safe” feature. This service is about auditing the security of websites who subscribe to this feature.

A person named Russ McRee documented five XSS errors in five sites who uses McAfee’s service. “There’s a responsibility to the consumer that really seems to be missing in that service. The average consumer assumes that because I see that label I must be safe,” he said to The Register.

A representative from of the five sites said that he is unaware of any breaches.

Bypass UAC

According to the author of the article at PC Magzine called New Windows Utility Claims To Bypass UAC, this is not a good utility and it makes computers vulnerable.

When users try to install the software, it will require Administrator access. Therefore, users has to trust the program whether it’s a legitimate program or a virus/malware.

What the iReboot authors did to make this software work what it is suppose to do is that they rewrote the program into two halves. One is a Windows service and the other is a user mode interface.

XP SP3 - Delayed

Microsoft has decided to delay the last service pack for Windows XP.  According the the article at Computerworld, the delay is caused by a compatibility issue  between the POS (Point-of-Sale) application for some retailers and the operating system. The application is called Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS). The company has setup filters so that Windows Update will not offer users the XP SP3 update.

The incompatibilities were only discovered just several days ago. Microsoft recommends users to visit the TechNet forums if they want to learn more about SP3.

There is no word when it will be released.

Boot Camp

A new version of Boot Camp has been released. There are different versions for each of the Windows XP and Vista operating systems. Therefore, there is a version for XP and a 32-bit and 64-bit versions for Vista.

The file size is over 200 MB and users can download it Apple’s Support site. Apple notes that this version, “Addresses issues and improves compatibility with (the relevant supported Windows installation) Microsoft running on a Mac computer using Boot Camp.”

For those who will install XP with SP3 in the future, they need to install this version of Boot Camp, which is version 2.1, before they can complete the XP SP3 installation.

New Details on XP SP3

A website has reported pre-release details about the last service pack for Windows XP.

The details were divided into six different sections. On the second section, it notes that those who are using the Windows XP Media Center Edition or the Windows XP Tablet Edition can only get the service pack via Windows Update.

This service pack will be an optional supplement for OEMs according to the fifth section. The author of the article notes on the third section that instead of 3 waves, the languges will now be released in just 2 waves since Microsoft will combine waves 2 and 3 into just 1 wave.

QuickTime Vulnerability in Windows

A new vulnerability on Apple’s multi-media player, QuickTime, has been reported by Information Week.

“A remote vulnerability exists in the QuickTime player for Windows XP and Vista (latest service packs). The vulnerability was successfully tested in Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista SP1 environments,” said Petko Petkov who is a founder of a computer security consultancy.

He has not mentioned whether he will release the details of the attack publicly after Apple patches or has had a chance to patch this particular vulnerability.

Dell Will Still Sell XP

Computer maker, Dell, will still sell Windows XP beyond the June 30 Microsoft sales cutoff date according to a confirmed report by Info World.

If users opt for an XP version, it will still be considered the same thing as buying a Vista license and Microsoft will claim it as a sale of their Vista operating system. They will also receive a Vista DVD installation disc when they purchase their computers with XP so that they can install Vista over it in the future in case they want to switch to it later on.

The Vostro and Dell XPS gaming systems has an additional small fee for XP systems although the other computer models do not have a fee.

Using Gmail via Windows Mail

A tutorial is available at techrepublic.com on how to add an existing Gmail account to Windows Mail.

The article notes that Google has added IMAP capabilities to their their Gmail service so users can access their Gmail emails by using Windows Mail after configuring it.

There are a lot of steps to do this procedure and the author posted a step-by-step guide on how to do it. Screen shots of the Gmail and Windows Mail settings are included to make it easier for users to follow the procedure. The last step may take a few minutes depending on how many emails that a user has.
