Windows’ Security

Symantec Corp. has released a report a few days ago that Microsoft’s Windows operating system is more secure than either Mac OS X or Linux.

In the report, they listed how many vulnerabilities each operating system had, how many of them are high priorities, and what is the average fix time for those vulnerabilties.

Windows came in first place. The second place is taken by Red Hat Linux. Apple’s Mac OS X came in third place while Sun came in last place.

Anuj Nayar from Apple said, “Apple takes security very seriously and has a great track record of addressing vulnerabilities before they affect you. ”

Windows Live’s Search Function

The Register has released an article about Microsoft’s search engine called “Windows Live”. The article claimed that the search engine returns more malware-infected sites than its competitors such as Google and Yahoo.

It gives an example of how users can test their claim so they (the users) can see the results for themselves.

A statement was released by a Microsoft representative and it says “to the extent that spammers are successful in essentially manipulating results, they will hurt the user experience on all search engines”.

Article On Windows’ Booting Problems

PC Advisor has posted an article which gives people some advice when their computers that has a Windows operating system would not boot.

It says that if there is no noise that you can hear after you power up your PC, your PSU may have been damaged or it may be unplugged from the PC’s motherboard although that is a very unlikely scenario if a user has not opened his PC for a while.

Another problem that users may encounter is that there may be software conflict which prevents Windows from booting up correctly.

If Windows won’t load in safe mode, users should use the recovery console which is located in a boot-able disc.

Microsoft OneCare

A news has been released that Microsoft admitted that their OneCare software, which is a software designed to fight viruses and keep a user’s computer safe, is not as good as it should have been.

Jimmy Kuo who is a member of the security research at Microsoft said “The recent detection numbers were not stellar. We missed capturing a VB100 [Virus Bulletin 100] in the last test because we missed one virus. As a result, we have adopted new methodologies to … look more closely at families of viruses that have been found to be ‘in the wild,’ [those] found actively spreading among users.”
