Adobe Reader Flaw - Fixed

Adobe has released a patch for the flaw that was recently found on their Reader software which is used by users who view .pdf files.

The flaw affects versions 6 and 7. The flaw let attackers trick users on opening malformed PDF files so they (the users) can be exposed to malware. Piotr Bania is the person who is credited on discovering the flaw.

Uprading to version 7.0.9 or to version 8 fixes the problem but an upgrade to version 8 is better since the newer version also fixes more vulnerabilites.

Undocumented APIs

In an Iowa court, where an antitrust action against Microsoft is currently happening, a software expert testified that Microsoft uses undocumented API which stands for Application Programming Interfaces.

On one of the emails of a product manager at Microsoft, he wrote, ‘All I can say is holy API batman…I’m not kidding…we are talking about literally 500-800 APIs here, no joke,’

These undocumented APIs supposedly allows Microsoft’s developers to code better programs than their competitors when creating programs specifically for the Windows operating system.

The expert added that these were included in a CD-ROM but it is in a very low profile to discourage developers on implementing them.

Safari On Windows?

Recent news reports has been floating in the internet that Apple’s default internet browser which is called “Safari,” may be released for the Windows operating systems.

The main reason about this is that Safari’s engine called “WebKit” which is capable on porting programs to a Windows environment.

Scott Gilbertson, a blogger for Wired News wrote “Some people think Apple would be better off not porting its software to Windows and keeping the ‘Mac experience’ unique to their own platform.”

UK Schools

BECTA, which stands for British Educational Communications and Technology Agency announced that schools should not upgrade to the new Windows operating system, Vista, and the new Office upgrade which is version 2007.

Some of the reasons are the costs and they also said that both of them are not “must have”. Another reason is that many students were trained on an older version of Office and the 2007 version does not have a feature that can revert back to the classic interface.

Schools are also advised to wait for BECTA’s final report which will be released in 2008.

Networking - People not Computers - do we have the technology?

(People) Networking is passing out information about yourself and your services to people you meet, and should result, eventually, in referrals for business from the people you have come into contact with along the lines of ‘Oh, you have this problem? Funny, I met a techie this morning, seemed very professional, here’s his card’. The only bad networking is no networking. So what does that mean for the freelance and small computer business person/geek. Well, for a start, it means loads of time stood in a corner cringing and looking at your feet, if you’ve really not got the heart for it. Or, there’s the other way. Read on if you want to know more…
