The Danger of Social Engineering to Businesses

Over the years I’ve talked to a lot of people, most of which are seeking advice or guidance on some kind of computing related subject, which is fine, I’m happy to help anyone looking to improve their ability. However, usually when sitting in a general chat room and people are aware of my computing ability I’ll often get a question along the lines of “Can you hack web based email accounts?”, the request usually comes from a 12-15 year old teenage boys. My usual response is to direct them to google. Now in reality, hacking someones webmail account isn’t really that hard if you know enough about the person.

For example, if you wanted to gain access to an account owned by a close family member you would probably already know enough information about them to answer the security questions that allow you to reset their password, hell you may even be able to guess their existing password.

Storm Worm

A new email worm has spread globally.

The worm is activated through a file named Read More.exe. When the file is executed, a Trojan called Small.DAM is downloaded into the machines and a backdoor is created for malware users which let them exploit the affected machines.

The subject line of the message is “230 dead as storm batters Europe.” Other alternative file names for the worms are Full Clip.exe, Full Story.exe, and Video.exe.

Researchers believes that the worm originated in Asia. The most likely purpose of this worm is to steal information.

Finding your Niche

In the IT industry, especially in the big nasty world of doing it for yourself (or Freelancing, as we optimistically call it) there are many, many people that can do what we do, who can do it better (they profess) quicker, cheaper and with more ‘pizzazz’. It’s a nerd eat nerd world out there, and if you’re going to make a living, really, you need to have another approach, a different slant on what the others are doing, that will make you unique.

Attack on Symantec Users

Users that use Symantec’s AntiVirus Corporate Edition and Client Security are being attacked by worms according to CNET.

The worms target a vulnerability that Symantec already patched seven months ago. However, the patch has to be downloaded and installed manually unlike other editions where the patches can be installed automatically. Therefore, the ones who are in trouble are the ones who did not update their Symantec products for a long time.

The affected PCs process denial of service attacks and sends out spam.
