McAfee Products For Vista

Security software developer, McAfee, has announced that they have upgraded their security software suites version 2007. The upgrade enables compatibility with Windows Vista which was just released worldwide yesterday.

Besides being compatible with Vista, the upgrade also enables users to have faster browsing speeds and less usage on the RAM and CPU.

The upgrade can be installed either automatically via a silent update or users can manually install the udpate by downloading it on their computer.

Some of the tasks that their products can do are secure file deletion and wireless home network protection.

Repair Tool of the Week: Unlocker 1.8.5

Unlocker is a Windows Explorer extension which allows you to right click on a file or folder that you get an error when deleting or moving. Unlocker can help you unlock files that produce error messages like these (or similar to):

  • Cannot delete file: Access is denied
  • There has been a sharing violation.
  • The source or destination file may be in use.
  • The file is in use by another program or user.
  • Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.

ATI Catalyst

The final version for the ATI Catalyst driver, which is Vista-compatible, has been released.

Version 7.1 supports both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Vista. Note that only Radeon 9500 and newer models are supported by this driver version. Other products of ATI that are based on Theater 550 Pro are also supported. Theatre 650’s status is not mentioned on the release notes whether it is supported. Version 7.1 also supports Blu-ray and HD DVD playback for the first time.

Free Optimizer for Vista

The Advanced WindowsCare Personal software by IObit will support Microsoft Vista according to a recent press release.

IObit is a company that was started by two individuals and it has been around since 2004. The president of IObit, Hugo Dong said “Although Windows Vista has been designed for optimal usage, it eats too much RAM and CPU.”

Some of its features are cleaning cache files and inspection of the CPU, service, and memory settings.

Windows Defender

A two-week study has been conducted by Webroot, a company that develops anti-spyware products, on Windows Defender which is Microsoft’s anti-spyware program on Vista.

Twenty-five malicious code samples has been tested and 84% of them was not detected by Windows Defender. The codes that were not detected consists of keyloggers, spyware, and Trojan horse programs. Most of them are not compatible with Vista but the others were able to install on the PCs with Vista operating systems.

Gaming On Vista

A former engineer who worked for Microsoft has expressed his concerns on the status of video gaming on Microsoft Vista.

He mentioned that Vista shows three warnings when installing games that have been downloaded. First, the operating system warns that the data/game that you are downloading may be harmful. Then, another warning shows up when a user installs the game. A last warning occurs which asks for the administrator’s password/code.

Quicktime Player

Apple has patched their software called Quicktime. However, the patch only applies to Mac computers and it is not yet available for users who uses a Windows operating system.

The patch was release two days ago which fixes a vulnerability that lets an attacker take over a person’s computer. The flaw is called the zero-day bug.

Currently, all Windows versions of Quicktime are affected by the vulnerability so users should not use that software for the time being.

Win XP Support

Microsoft has announced that their operating systems Windows XP Home and Media Center Editions will be supported until 2009. That means that it now has five years of mainstream support plus five more years for extended support. It will match the length of time for support on the Pro version of Windows XP.

This is a big issue since it will give XP users more time to decide on when is the right time for them to upgrade to the new Microsoft Vista operating system.
