AntiVirus Corporate Edition 10.2

Symantec has released their anti-virus protection for corporate users of Microsoft Vista. The software is designed to provide defense against viruses and spyware programs for Vista.

This edition includes Client Security 3.1 which provides anti-virus and anti-spyware for the clients of those that have the corporate edition.

The vice president of Consumer Engineering in Symantec said “…we want to reassure our more than 50 million active users that our leading PC security products will be available from day one to protect their PCs…”

New Windows Flaw

FrSIRT has identfied a new Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 flaw. The flaw lets an attacker to cause a system to crash which results in a denial of service condition.

The Print Spooler service (Spoolsv.exe) is the location of the flaw. An error in the service that does not properly handle GetPrinterData() requests by the system causes the flaw.

The current solution is to disable the Print spooler service by typing in the following command:

sc stop Spooler & sc config Spooler start=disabled

It is rated as a moderate risk.

Adobe Acrobat IE flaw

A flaw has been located in Adobe’s documentation software, Acrobat. The versions that are affected are the standard and professional versions from 7.0.0 to 7.0.8. Acrobat Reader versions 7.0.0 to 7.0.8 are also affected.

The flaw is critical since it allows a botnet to take full control of a user’s computer when they open pdf files in Internet Explorer. It also makes the user’s PC to crash. Users that use Firefox and other browsers are not affected.

Removing AcroPDF.dll from a user’s PC is a temporary solution which stops IE from opening PDF files.

F-Secure’s Client Security 7.0

In January, F-Secure will release its newest antivirus program called Client Security version 7. The software is also a desktop firewall software and two of the new features are the stand-alone rootkit detection program called Blacklight which identify hidden malicious codes, and host-based intrusion prevention.

Rootkits are designed by programmers to be embedded deep into an operating system. F-secure advices admininistrators to oversee the process that F-Secure facilitates when removing the rootkits.

The cost of the software will be $41. The software is designed for the 64-bit version of Windows Vista. However, F-Secure will also release a beta version for the 32-bit version of Vista.
